Former Scotland striker-turned-radio host for talkSPORT Ally McCoist has claimed Jordan Henderson would struggle to make into Scotland’s current midfield.

Ally McCoist Makes Bold Jordan Henderson Claim

Many fans, experts and quiet observers questioned whether Jordan Henderson’s unexpected switch to Saudi Arabia would jeopardise his international career.

Gareth Southgate has since rubbished those suggestions, naming the former Liverpool captain in his first England squad since the summer window and starting him against Ukraine, in one of two fixtures during this international break.

This has, of course, divided the country in what was largely deemed as a conservative midfield three composed of two sitting midfielders, which forced one of the Premier League’s standout performers, James Maddison, into an unnatural position on the left flank last week.

The inclusion of Henderson, who now represents Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, has been called into question alongside the likes of Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips, who have hardly featured for their club sides over the past season or so.

TalkSPORT host Ally McCoist has even questioned whether the England vice-captain would get into the Scotland team, whom they face in Tuesday’s 150th Anniversary Heritage match in Glasgow.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show McCoist was posed the question as to whether Jordan Henderson would be included in the Scottish midfield. In reply, he said: “No. Our midfield, and the left side of the defence, are the strongest areas of our team.

“[Scott] McTominay, [Callum] McGregor, [John] McGinn and [Billy] Gilmour. I’m struggling to leave any of those out at this moment in time.

“Jordan Henderson would not doubt get games for Scotland, but right now I’m struggling to leave any of those four boys out.”
