Many football fans will be asking – why are England playing Scotland on Tuesday in an International Friendly? The short answer is that the match is being played to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the oldest international fixture.

England Will Play Scotland On Tuesday In 150th Anniversary Fixture

You must go back to 1872 to find the first time footballing rivals Scotland and England played – with the game being played on November 1872 in Scotland.

The international match is the oldest played and to mark that the sides are back in action this Tuesday at Hamden Park to celebrate 150 years of head-to-heads.

Unfortunately for football fans, that first encounter ended in a 0-0 draw, but things livened up a tad in their second ever clash, which ended 4-2 to England and was played on 8th March 1873.

It’s reported that that opening matchup had between 2,500-4,000 spectators, who each paid one shilling each to watch the game.

Since those first two Scotland vs England head-to-heads, the sides have built up a bitter (but healthy) rivalry, with this Tuesday’s meeting set to be their 116th game together and will be shown LIVE on Channel 4.

It was also announced by the English FA that England will sport a pre-match football top that will show the original crest from that opening 1872 meeting.

The shirts will be limited-edition and supplied by top sports brand Nike, plus will later be auctioned off in raise money for the FA’s main official charity – the Alzheimer’s Society.

You can see it modelled by England captain and top scorer – Harry Kane – here after a photoshoot at Hamilton Cresent in Glasgow, which is where the first-ever 0-0 match was staged.

It’s now the home of West Of Scotland Cricket Club.

Just like that very first Scotland vs England match in 1872, the most recent Three Lions vs Tartan Army game also finished 0-0.
