A very active day on Friday for Frankie Dettori as his Glorious Goodwood rides see the Italian get the leg-up on five horses that include Mimikyu in the Group Three Glorious Stakes and Equilateral in the Group Two King George Stakes.

Friday 4th August 2023 Frankie Dettori Rides at Glorious Goodwood
- 2:25 – Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m ITV: EPICTETUS @ 8/1 with Paddy Power
Nostrum is the one to beat here so Frankie Dettori might be playing for places. He rides the John Gosden-trained Epictetus, who we last saw running down the field in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was also 5th in the Dante Stakes at York back in May but really his last two runs have been a tad poor so needs to bounce back, but could do on this softer ground having won the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom with cut in April.
The drop back to a mile is fine on the softer ground and ran the Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin to 3 1/2 lengths over this trip at Doncaster last season in the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes.

Very competitive 1m contest here and it’s a prize the David O’Meara yard have done well in recently – winning 2 of the last 3, so their runners Blue For You, Bopedro, Darkness, Rhoscolyn, Escobar and last year’s winner Orbaan are respected.
But Frankie rides for the Charlie Johnston team, who won this race in 2021.
Dutch Decoy heads here in winning form too after a neck success at Newmarket last month. He’s up just 3lbs for that and has hit the top five in all his last 7 races to suggest he’s got a top each-way chance for Dettori.

Another race with a warm favourite as the John Quinn runner Highfield Princess is the one the others have to aim at. Frankie is reunited with Equilateral – a horse he’s ridden to be second twice this season at Haydock. Highly-tried the last day in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot but ran a blinder to be 5th (of 17).
Oldest runner in the field and hasn’t raced much on softer ground, but in a race that lacks depth outside the hot favourite would have a squeak of being involved for the places.
- 4:10 – l’Ormarins King’s Plate Glorious Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m4f RTV: MIMIKYU @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
The William Haggas runner Hamish is the top-rated in the field but being a Group 3 winner this season has to give 3lbs away to most and 6lbs away to the Frankie-ridden filly Mimikyu. This 4 year-old has lost her way slightly this season having won the G2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in September, but it’s interesting connections are reaching for the first-time cheekpieces here in a bid to find a bit of old form.
That said, she’s not run too bady this season with a close second in the Bronte Stakes at York and last time was third in the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock. This is a race she’d have a winning chance in, being the second top-rated in the field and getting 6lbs in weight, while she’s also handled soft ground in the past.

Another ride for the Charlie Johnston yard for Frankie in his final Glorious Goodwood mount on Friday. This 3 year-old is a two-time winner from his opening seven races but was last seen running down the field (5th of 7) at Sandown. The handicapper has dropped him a few pounds for that effort and the longer trip will suit having kept on well the last day.
He’s also been gelded since that last run and had a small break of 48 days to recharge for this. Improvement needed but no surprise to see a fair each-way run.
