Oriol Romeu has completed a transfer back to Barcelona from Girona after 19 years away, with the 31-year-old’s new club putting a €400m release clause on the midfielder.

The Spaniard grew up in Barcelona and and after graduating La Masia’s academy, Romeu made the decision to come to England and sign for Chelsea in the Premier League.

After signing for Chelsea, Romeu played back in Spain for Valencia, then for Stuttgart before making a move back to England when he signed for Southampton in 2015.

It was Southampton where Romeu really found home, as the Spaniard played 256 games for the side before returning to La Liga in 2022 when signing to Girona for €5m.

After over 10 years away from his home, Romeu finally returns to Barcelona this summer in a deal reportedly worth €8m.

Barcelona have become famous for their rather extreme release clauses over recent years and Romeu will be no different, as the veteran will cost €400m for any club that wants to sign the midfielder.

Romeu joins Ilkay Gundogan as a new midfielder at Barcelona, with Xavi keen to replace the long-serving Sergio Busquets who reunited with Lionel Messi in the MLS for Inter Miami this year.

Romeu’s experience will be invaluable in a fairly young Barcelona squad, after the Spaniard won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2011/12.

Although Romeu came through La Masia’s academy, the midfielder has played just one La Liga game for the senior side and he will be excited to finally get on the pitch for his home club after 12 years away this season.
