Oisin Murphy rides Chaldean in the Prix Jean Prat this weekend, replacing the suspended Frankie Dettori in Sunday’s feature Group 1 contest at Deauville.
Oisin Murphy Rides Chaldean This Weekend In Prix Jean Prat
Despite a long association with trainer Andrew Balding, the big race over 7f on the Normandy Coast marks the first time that Murphy gets the leg-up on this three-year-old Frankel colt.
David Probert and Ryan Moore rode Chaldean before Dettori took over in last year’s Champagne Stakes at Doncaster races during the St Leger Festival. The pair won that Group 2 contest by 3 1/2 lengths.
Dettori misses this regular mount after receiving a nine-day ban for careless riding at Royal Ascot last month. Suspension also rules the Italian out of partnering Emily Upjohn in the Group 1 Coral Eclipse on Saturday.
William Buick, another jockey with ties to the Blading stable, replaces Dettori on John & Thady Gosden’s four-year-old filly at Sandown races this weekend. It’s Murphy who connections have turned to for Chaldean’s cross-Channel bid, however.

The Prix Jean Prat is a 1,400m contest for three-year-old colts and fillies at Deauville on Sunday. Dropping back in trip on likely softer ground and a return to a straight course could both be positives for Chaldean.
Barry Mahon, racing manager of owners Juddmonte, told the medica about Murphy partnering the 2,000 Guineas hero: “Once Frankie was unavailable it was a relatively straightforward decision about who was going to ride. Oisin is Andrew [Balding’s] first jockey and he’s a top-class rider, so we’re lucky to have him on board.
“Oisin knows the horse and has ridden him at home before, both last year and this year. Frankie had a spin on him before the Guineas, but otherwise I know Oisin has done a lot.
“Oisin will have another sit on him tomorrow, and provided he’s happy with how the horse is then it’s all systems go to run at the weekend.”
