Aston Villa’s hopes of playing in Europe next season were dented following today’s 1-1 draw away at Brentford as Douglas Luiz snatched a late equaliser to give the visitors a point.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have won 12 of their last 19 Premier League games and soared up the table into sixth from near the relegation zone under Steven Gerrard in October.

Ollie Watkins has become one of England’s most prolific scorers and now has 14 goals to his name – seventh most in the league with five goals and 1 assist in his last five appearances.

The visitors were dealt a shock by mid-table Brentford at the Community Stadium when Ivan Toney put the hosts in front after 65 minutes before Douglas Luiz grabbed a point for the travelling side in the 87th minute.

Aston Villa Top Six Odds

To finish in the top six:

  • Brighton @ 4/11
  • Liverpool @ 1/4
  • Tottenham @ 5/6
  • Aston Villa @ 7/2

According to Premier League betting sites, Villa are now 7/2 to finish in the top six and mark the return of European football to Villa Park. Today’s draw could prove crucial, but the run-in for Villa gets even more difficult.

With trips to Old Trafford and Anfield on the horizon alongside Spurs and Brighton at home, Aston Villa will be tested to the limit.

Saturday’s draw marked nine straight league games without defeat including seven wins – the most in-form team in England’s top flight with title challengers Manchester City.

A price of 7/2 gives Villa an implied probability of 22% to finish in the top six. Liverpool (80%), Brighton (73%) and Spurs (55%) all posses greater chances but as known, anything could happen.

The club last played in Europe 13 years ago during the 2010-11 Europa League which was their third straight appearance in the competition. Players such as Leon Bailey, Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne with Champions League experience are craving to bring a taste of it to Birmingham.
