According to a report, high-flying Aston Villa have registered their interest in signing Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.

Walker’s contract at the Etihad comes to an end in 2024, and has now been identified as an ideal candidate to strengthen the right-back position at Villa Park.

The Villa board are said to be backing Unai Emery after turning the club’s season around in astonishing fashion. Plenty of arrivals are now expected during the next few transfer windows.

And it’s believed that the Spaniard wants an experienced Premier League player to slot into the defence. Walker, of course, fits that bill perfectly.

Not only is the 32-year-old’s contract coming to an end at City, but he has now lost his place as a regular starter.

City’s new look back three has seen Manuel Akanji become the preferred right-sided defender, leaving Walker in limbo.

Villa’s interest comes as Ashley Young nears the end of his career, and doubts are raised over Matty Cash’s future.

Young is 37 now, and Cash may be on the move in the summer after becoming fairly injury prone in the Midlands.

This would surely see Walker become a regular starter at Villa Park, as the club look set to gain European football this term.

The right sided defender has previously played for the club on loan back in 2011. Now, with his contract nearing an end, could we see the England international return to the Midlands?

Interestingly too, Walker isn’t the only City asset Emery is interested in.

Former Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips is also believed to be a target of Emery’s this summer.
