Popular female Rachael Blackmore continues to rip-up the horse racing record books. The bulk of these career earnings for Blackmore have, of course, built-up from riding racehorses at the highest level. She’s mopped up a stack of Cheltenham Festival winners in recent years, that included two Champion Hurdles with Honeysuckle and a Cheltenham Gold Cup with A Plus Tard – a race that won the owners ÂŁ351,687.50, of which Blackmore would have got around 11%.
Rachael Blackmore also became a household name with racing and non-racing folk when winning the 2021 Grand National on Minella Times (watch below) and becoming the first female rider of the big Aintree race.
In the process, Blackmore won her famous owner JP McManus ÂŁ375,000.
Over the last five seasons (April 2018-2023) she’s won the owners the horses she’s ridden a staggering €8m in total prize money – with €5m of that made up with her winners. During that five-year period Blackmore has ridden over 350 winners, from over 2,300 rides.

Rachael Blackmore: The Early Days
Rachael Blackmore was born on 11th July 1989 to teacher Charles and farmer Eimir Blackmore – growing up on a farm in County Tipperary in Ireland.
Blackmore began riding at an early age on her parents farm – riding in pony club meetings and hunts.
As her riding career began her love of horses was also backed up by getting a degree in equine science at the University of Limerick, which is sure to have come in handy in understanding her rides.
Stowaway Pearl Was Rachael Blackmore’s First Ever Winner as an Amateur
Blackmore rode her first winner on February 10th 2011 on a horse called Stowaway Pearl for trainer Shark Hanlon, with the win coming at Thurles racecourse.
She went professional in March 2015 after riding many point-to-point winners and ended with seven wins as an amateur rider.
After riding pro, the first Blackmore winner as a fully-fledged jockey was Most Honourable – again trained by Hanlon, but this time at Clonmel racetrack on September 3rd 2015.
She later went onto win the conditional riders’ championship in Ireland in 2017 – becoming the first woman to do so.
Blackmore Rode in Her First Grand National In 2018
In 2018 Rachael Blackmore had her first ride in the Aintree Grand National on a horse called Alpha Des Obeaux, who was trained by Mouse Morris. The horse had Grand National odds of 33/1 but fell at one of the most famous Grand National fences – The Chair.
A Plus Tard Was Rachael Blackmore’s First Cheltenham Festival Winner
The former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner – A Plus Tard – supplied Rachael Blackmore with her first Cheltenham Festival winner back in 2019 when taking the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase by 16 lengths. She also followed up that year on another horse that would go onto win the Gold Cup – Minella Indo, when that horse won the 2019 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.
Both horses were trained by Henry De Bromhead, who remains Rachael Blackmore’s biggest supporter seeing she’s his number one stable jockey.
Grand National ‘Girl Power’ For Blackmore in 2021 With Minella Times
Rachael Blackmore was already starting to make a name for herself in the world of horse racing, but he catapulted her growing status to new heights when winning the 2021 Grand National on Minella Times in 2021.
The 8 year-old (at the time) was a well-fancied 11/1 shot in the betting and despite the longer trip a big unknown, stayed on powerfully to win the world-famous steeplechase that year by 6 1/2 lengths. Minella Times only had 10st 3lbs to carry that day, which was a huge help in lasting out the bigger distance.
In the process, the win made Blackmore the first ever winning Grand National female rider, with Katie Walsh (sister of Ruby Walsh) doing the best of the ‘girl power’ riders before when third on Seabass in 2012.

In 2021 Rachael Blackmore won the Aintree Grand National on Minella Times – becoming the first female rider to win the world’s greatest horse race.
2. She’s Also the First Female Rider To Be Crowned Top Jockey At The Cheltenham Festival
In 2021 Rachael Blackmore rode six races at the Cheltenham Festival, making her the top jockey at the meeting that year. In the process she also became the first female rider to be crowned the ‘top jock’ at the biggest horse racing fixture of the season.
3. Blackmore Dates Fellow Jockey Brian Hayes
Rachael Blackmore’s boyfriend is fellow jockey Brian Hayes. He rode his first winner in 2008, so has been riding a bit longer than his girlfriend, while they also rode against each other in the 2021 Grand National that Blackmore won. Hayes ended in 15th on a horse called Class Conti.
She lives with Hayes in County Carlow, Ireland and also fellow jockey Patrick Mullins, who is the son of Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins.
4. Rachael Blackmore Has a Degree In Equine Science
When Blackmore decides to hang up her riding boots, she’s certainly got something to fall back on after getting a degree in equine science when riding as an amateur. The original plan for Blackmore was to a vet, however, this has been put on hold (for now anyway) after showing a talent for riding racehorses.
5. She Loves Baking
Rachael Blackmore also loves to get in the kitchen and bake – so, make a stint in celebrity ‘Bake-Off’ could be on the cards in the future. Her signature baking dish is a chocolate Coca-Cola cake, which sounds like it’s got a fair few calories in, so she’s probably more ‘baking and sharing’ than ‘baking and eating’ with one eye on the horse racing weight scales!
