Tony Calvin is taking a chance on the Peter Fahey-trained Visionarian here against the three likely big players – Star Stage, Saint Roi and Banbridge – who are not all certain runners if the track gets more rain. The pick ran below par the last day at Leopardstown but before that was only 2 1/4 lengths behind Saint Roi on Boxing Day and on that form looks over-priced. Connections have freshened him up since while the longer trip could also bring out more.

2.20pm The Jewson Anniversary 4-y-o Juvenile Hurdle (Class 1) Grade 1 2m 1f ITV: CHAOS CONTROL (e/w)

Yes, this Stuart Edmunds runner has a fair bit to find on these terms but after winning well at Market Rasen the last day (22 lengths) could still have a lot more to come. Of course, this is a big step up in grade too for Chaos Control – however, connections have given him almost 2 months off to prepare for this and with 10 runners and three places up for grabs looks the value call in a race that lacks a bit of depth.

4.40pm The Close Brothers Red Rum Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 1) Grade 3 2m ITV: HATCHER & HASANKEY

Two picks here. First up is the Skelton-trained Hatcher, who returned after 3 1/2 months off the last day to be a fair third (of 9) at Ascot. We can expect this 10 year-old to have improved for that run as it also came off the back of a wind operation. Tristan Durrell is booked and can take off a handy 5lbs.

Hasankey is the other pick and also has a claimer (Lewis Dobb) on to take off a handy 7lbs from the saddle. This 7 year-old was last seen running second at Warwick – beaten just over 3 lengths – and gets in here off the same mark. With seven top two finishes in his 14 chase runs, he’s a horse that knows how to get involved and certainly won’t mind if there’s any more of the wet stuff.
