Former Wales and Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has called for Aleksandar Mitrovic to be banned for 10 games following his red card against Manchester United on Sunday evening.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was shown a red card for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in his side’s 3-1 FA Cup loss to Man United on Sunday evening.

The visiting side initially took the lead with Mitrovic converting from a corner, and were in total control of the tie.

It took a turn for the worst for Marco Silva’s side in the 72nd minute however.

Kavanagh was told to have a look at the VAR monitor after Willian appeared to deny a clear Jadon Sancho goal with a handball, for which he was red carded and United were handed a penalty.

That wasn’t the only red card though. Fulham boss Silva was shown his marching orders for interfering with the referee when reviewing the VAR footage.

Clearly outraged by the decision, Mitrovic confronted the referee and appeared to push him, which resulted in a third red card in just 60 seconds.

United went on to turn the game around and win 3-1 thanks to Marcel Sabitzer’s first Red Devils goal, as well as a Bruno Fernandes brace.

Since his red card, debates have appeared on social media over how long Mitrovic’s ban should be.

Some have said he should receive just a standard three match ban, whereas others have called for a lengthier suspension.

Dean Saunders’ Comments

Former Premier League striker Dean Saunders is one that has weighed in on the debate over the Serbian’s potential ban.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Welshman said that Fulham’s star man should be handed a 10 match suspension.

“I have to say it’s been coming since the World Cup where people started crowding the referee,” Saunders said.

“It’s transferred into our game, and went a bit further when [Bruno] Fernandes pushed the linesman,

“It’s resulted in what [Aleksandar] Mitrovic has done,

“I’ve seen Mark Halsey saying he should get a 10 game ban and I have got to agree with him.

“It’s getting worse and worse. Everyone is crowding the referee, sprinting at the referee,

“You can’t touch the referee, I’d give him 10 games for that. Send a message out to all of the players.”
