Liverpool have vowed to ban a fan from Anfield for life after they invaded the pitch to celebrate the Reds’ seventh goal against Manchester United on Sunday, with chaos ensuing on the touchline.

Manchester United were on the wrong end of a 7-0 drumming from Liverpool on Sunday and while there was more than enough action on the pitch, there was also plenty of drama off the field.

During the celebrations for Liverpool’s seventh of the game, a fan broke past security and sprinted over towards the Liverpool players who were gathered in a huddle on the touchline.

The fan slipped as he approached the players and wiped out Andy Robertson as well as a couple of other players as he fell to the floor, with concern over any damage to the full-back increasing as he winced in pain.

Robertson was able to finish the remainder of the Premier League clash and despite no long-term damage to the Scotsman, there was immediately calls to ban the supporter who endangered the Liverpool players in the celebrations.

“There is no excuse for this unacceptable and dangerous behaviour,” Liverpool said in a statement. “The safety and security of players, colleagues and supporters is paramount.

“The club will now follow its formal sanctions process and has suspended the alleged offender’s account until the process is complete.”

Merseyside police have confirmed that 16-year-old boy has been arrested “on suspicion of encroaching onto a football pitch”. Liverpool’s statement continued to read that the individual is set to attend a voluntary meeting this week to address the situation.

“If found guilty of the offence of entering the pitch without permission, the offender could face a criminal record and a lifetime ban from Anfield and all Premier League stadiums. These acts are dangerous, illegal and have severe consequences.

“He is scheduled to voluntarily attend a police station in Merseyside regarding this incident.”

Although the acts of the supporter slightly taints the result, Liverpool fans will still be celebrating their 7-0 win over Manchester United for many years to come.
