Ruby Walsh Is Tipping Constitution Hill – But Who Will Finish 2nd and 3rd?

Ruby Walsh, who rode 59 Cheltenham Festival winners, can’t see beyond Constitution Hill winning the 2023 Champion Hurdle – no real shocker here.

However, with the Nicky Henderson superstar one of the big Cheltenham Festival bankers, many punters will be opting for a forecast and tricast bet here.

With that in mind, Ruby Walsh has also given his take on which horses will be running second and third behind Constitution Hill.

Ruby says, despite State Man being a useful horse, Constitution Hill’s jockey Nico De Boinville will just keep things simple. He’s expected to just sit off the pace and move three furlongs out, with his turn-of-foot the deciding factor.

The rest will be playing for the places.

Ruby told Paddy Power News – “Look Constitution Hill just looks different – he’s a horse of his generation and for racing it would be great if he is different. Frankel was different, Constitution Hill looks to be different, to me Kauto Star was always different. Hurricane Fly was too, I mean Hurricane Fly’s record what did he win 23/22 Grade 1’s – he was just different and Constitution Hill looks to be the same.”

Which Horses Will Finish Second and Third in The 2023 Champion Hurdle?

State Man, from the Willie Mullins yard, can finish second, according to Ruby Walsh. He feels his jockey Paul Townend will set the pace and try and kick on around the final bend.

But expects Constitution Hill to be sitting just behind him and have too many gears to let State Man try and win the race like that.

Yes, State Man is the winner of the Irish Champion Hurdle and in a normal year will be a big favourite himself to add the Champion Hurdle to that.

However, he’s facing a horse in Constitution Hill that is 5-from-5 and is billed as ‘a monster’.

What About Third?

Again, no real surprises here, but in a race that lacks depth it’s hard to get away from last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner – Vauban – taking the bronze medal.

Another from the Willie Mullins team, so Ruby thinks the County Carlow handler will have a 2-3 in the Champion Hurdle!

This 5 year-old has done little wrong this year, but also has seen the back of State Man twice at Leopardstown. Therefore, Ruby feels it’s going to be hard for the Ricci-owned horse to overturn that form. Let alone beat Constitution Hill!
