Trainer Gordon Elliott is yet to win the Welsh Grand National, but Betfair’s Kevin Blake thinks the powerful Irish handler can break his duck in the big Christmas marathon race on Tuesday 27th December. This 8 year-old ran 9th (of 40) in the Aintree Grand National (watch below) back in April and prior to that was second in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in February.
He returned to the track at the start of December with a fine second at Thurles in a decent Listed Chase and with that coming after a 236-day break will be spot-on for this. He’s also run well over 3m6f in the past, when a close up third to Galvin in the NH Challenge Cup at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival and also has a liking for softer ground if there is any more of the wet stuff.
The likely Welsh Grand National favourite is going to be the Venetia Williams-trained Quick Wave, who seems to have a leading chance at the weights being only 4lbs higher than when winning the London National at Sandown last time out. However, most punters have latched onto her now and, therefore, the value call in the race according to leading horse racing punter Kevin Blake is Escaria Ten.
