Constitution Hill Back in Action On Boxing Day at Kempton
The Nicky Henderson-trained Constitution Hill is back in action this Boxing Day as the unbeaten 5 year-old, who is 4-from-4 over hurdles, runs in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton (1:55pm).
This Michael Buckley-owned hurdler caught the public’s imagination by winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle by a remarkable 22-lengths back in March at the Cheltenham Festival and returned better than ever by bolting up in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle last time out at the end of November.
He had his stablemate – Epatante, who has won the Christmas Hurdle twice before, 12 lengths back in second that day and even though Constitution Hill has to give away 7lbs again to this JP McManus runner, it’s expected to be more of the same here on Boxing Day.
Yes, he’s not really going to be a betting proposition in the Christmas Hurdle, but it will still be a treat for Boxing Day Kempton racegoers to witness the next big National Hunt ‘talking horse’ in action.
He’s also as short as 1/3 @ BetUK for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival back in March, but you feel even an easy win here and those odds might not actually change much – mainly because he can’t get much shorter!
Owner Michael Buckley Relishing Kempton Challenge for Constitution Hill
Constitution Hill’s owner Michael Buckley told the Racing Post. “The enthusiasm of the crowd up there was outstanding. I was amazed by it – the reception was sensational.
“I have faith in the horse and have more after the Fighting Fifth. What he did there was pretty impressive and, on the ratings he should win, but you need good health and then good luck in the race. I’m aware of that and it’s not without stress thinking about it, but it’s fun – he’s a grand horse who I’m lucky to have. I loved Newcastle and how much people enjoyed seeing him.
“I thought Newcastle was remarkable. I had never been and looked at the pre-parade ring and people were eight deep before the race.
“The crowd was staggering. Whether they’re like that as a matter of habit or because of the performance I don’t know, but I saw a photographer who goes there at the ROA [Racehorse Owners Association] dinner and he said he’d never heard a cheer at Newcastle like it when the horse won.
“I’m taking it at face value and the people were fantastic – shouting Nico, Nico, Nico after the race and I was asked for my autograph, which has never happened before! The horse was spectacular and I hope he can do that more than just once.”
