Frankie Dettori has won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record-breaking six times during his career, with the most recent with the popular mare Enable. But what horse is the pocket Italian riding in this Sunday’s 2022 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp?

Frankie Dettori Rides Torquator Tasso In 2022 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
Popular jockey Frankie Dettori (51) has been handed the job of riding last year’s Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe hero – Torquator Tasso @ 15/2 with 888Sport – in Sunday’s Longchamp Group One contest.
Dettori, who has ridden 6 Arc winners in the past, has been booked by trainer Marcel Weiss to steer the current Arc champion and has been a regular at the yard to ride out last year’s winner ahead of his preparation for Sunday’s race.
The pair also teamed up at Baden Baden in early September when a close second in the Wettstar Grosser Preis von Baden (G1) – beaten a head by Menocino, who also holds an Arc entry for Sunday (watch below).

There was a muddling pace that day and connections felt after the race that didn’t suit last year’s Arc winner and is stongly fancied to overturn that form this weekend with the Steinberg-trained 4 year-old.
Trainer Marcel Weiss (Torquator Tasso) told the Racing Post “Everything went really well,” said Weiss of the gallop. “There was real harmony between horse and rider and it was important for us that Frankie came over this morning, especially to ride him around a right-handed track. He feels like a different horse that way round.”
“He has taken the race in Baden really well and has come out of it in great form,” said Weiss. “I think he found it less stressful than us.
“He looks great and mentally he just goes on with things – he’s a very tough horse. He did a light piece of work on Tuesday, nothing very serious, just as he always does when there is four weeks between races.”
Torquator Tasso Has Some Key Arc Trends To Defy
12 months ago Torquator Tasso won the Arc from stall 12, but with 75% of the last 20 winners coming from stalls 8 or lower this is still a key trend to note.
The bad news for Torquator Tasso this year though is that he’s been handed draw 18, so is another 6 horses deep at the start. Therefore, you feel that Frankie will have to work some magic from that berth to save energy and also not get into any traffic problems – but’s he’s a 6-time winner of the Arc so Tasso will have no short of experience in the saddle. If anyone can, Frankie can!
The other stat Torquator Tasso has to overcome is his age. He won as a 4 year-old 12 months ago, but is now another year older at 5 and since 1989 there have only been 2 winners aged 5 (Marienbard 2002 & Waldgeist 2019), with all the other winners aged 3 or 4!

Frankie Dettori Has Won The Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe 6 Times
No jockey has won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe more times that Frankie Dettori – the Italian has notched up 6 wins so far during his career!
The first came way back in 1995 with the Epsom Derby winner, Lammtarra for trainer Saeed Bin Suroor. He had to wait 6 years for his next in 2001 with Sakhee and followed-up up the next year with Marienbard – both trained by Bin Suroor again.
Another 13 years passed until we saw Frankie in the Arc winners’ enclosure after guiding Golden Horn (watch below) to victory for trainer John Gosden and then he had a purple-patch in 2017 and 2018 with the wonder mare Enable winning two Arcs on the bounce (watch below)
