York Racecourse Events & Fixtures

York Races today

The official narrative has horse racing at York on its current site, the Knavesmire, some common pasture southwest of the city centre, starting in 1730. Some historians dispute that but what’s not in doubt is the area has a rich heritage within this sport dating back to Roman times. The races at York today largely surround two major meetings in late spring and over the summer. Only Flat horse racing action takes place at the course.

York races today begin in mid-May with the three-day Dante Festival and conclude in early October with a two-day meeting. As there is no National Hunt horse racing here during the winter months like the Cheltenham Festival, the track is only used for half of the year. Widely regarded as one of the fairest horse racing venues in England, horses at York race on the floodplain of the River Ouse.

Configuration of York Races Today

A flat, left-handed course that suits galloping types, a full circuit is almost two miles round. There is a six-furlong straight course and seven-furlong chute used for shorter distance York races today but no straight mile like at Newbury or Ascot. Another chute in the back straight is used as a starting point for middle-distance races over a mile-and-three-quarters like the Ebor Handicap.

Being held up seldom works for horses running at York. This is because the track drains well and, unless there is torrential rain over the summer, has good ground from May until September. During the autumn, however, wet weather means going can turn heavy and the final meeting of the year in October is often held with testing conditions underfoot.

Key Races at York Today – Three Key Meetings

Some meetings at York Racecourse are more important fixtures than others. If Classic trials and the road to Royal Ascot interests you, then the three-day Dante Festival in mid-May will be of interest. Over the summer, there are plenty of big betting handicaps on the Knavesmire. While the Ebor Festival towards the end of August is the premier meeting of York races today, the John Smith’s Cup in early July is also well attended.

York Racecourse Events Feature Races When
Dante Festival Musidora Stakes, Dante Stakes, Yorkshire Cup May
John Smith’s Cup Meeting Summer Stakes, Silver Cup, John Smith’s Cup July
Ebor Festival Juddmonte International, Yorkshire Oaks, Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, Ebor Handicap August

Dante Festival York Races

On for three days around the middle of May, the Dante Festival follows the Guineas Festival at Newmarket and May Festival at Chester. There are two key Classic trials at the meeting in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes for fillies and Group 2 Dante Stakes for Epsom Derby hopefuls. There is also the Middleton for older fillies and mares.

Many racehorses use the Dante Festival at York to get ready for Royal Ascot with the Group 2 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes and Yorkshire Cup key trials for the big sprints and Gold Cup respectively. Here are all the races day by day from the meeting:

Dante Festival Day 1 – Duke Of York & Musidora Stakes

Kicking off the Dante Festival at York races today is an opening card that contains a “win and you’re in” race for the Ebor Handicap. This is the Jorvik Handicap over a mile-and-a-half. While the feature sprint contest is the Duke Of York, three-year-old fillies put their Classic credentials on the line in the Musidora Stakes. This is all the essential race info about everything going on at the track on day 1:

Dante Festival York Races Day 1 Class of Race Type of Race Race Distance

Dante Festival Day 2 – Dante Stakes & Middleton Fillies’ Stakes

On the middle day of the Dante Festival is the race from which the meeting gets its name. The Dante Stakes is a recognised Derby trial for The Derby at Epsom Downs races which, despite its close proximity to the premier Classic, often proves a useful form guide. Supporting one of the biggest York races today on this Thursday is the Middleton Stakes for older fillies and mares, plus the Hambleton Handicap for older milers and Westow Stakes for three-year-old sprinters. Here’s the card in full:

Dante Festival York Races Day 2 Class of Race Type of Race Race Distance
0-105 Sprint Handicap Class 2 4yo+ Flat Handicap 5f

Dante Festival Day 3 – Yorkshire Cup

The third and final day of the Dante Festival at York Racecourse is all about the stayers with the feature Yorkshire Cup. Supporting this Group 2 contest are a couple of Listed events for younger fillies. There are also three competitive handicaps for punters who like to bet on that action. These are all of the York races today as the curtain comes down on the Dante meeting:

John Smith’s Cup Meeting

After the opening Dante Festival, there are other smaller meetings on the Knavesmire in May, June and July. The biggest of those is the two-day John Smith’s Cup Meeting that follows or clashes with the Newmarket races called the July Festival. A long-term sponsorship with the beer brewed in nearby Tadcaster, this Heritage Handicap is a big betting race for punters. Let’s take a look at the cards on both days of the meeting:

John Smith’s Cup Meeting Day 1 – Summer Stakes

On the opening day of the John Smith’s Cup meeting, there are a lot of handicaps but the card has the Group 3 Summer Stakes, a 6f sprint contest, headlining proceedings. These are all the races on the Friday:

Music Showcase Weekend

Many racecourses including York have music acts like popstars and bands playing after racing finishes for the day over the summer. The Music Showcase Weekend on the penultimate or last Friday and Saturday in July caters for this on the Knavesmire. With respective feature races being the Lyric Fillies’ Stakes and York Stakes, here’s a little more about the respective cards.

Music Showcase Weekend Day 1 – Lyric Fillies’ Stakes

The opening evening of Music Showcase Weekend is pretty low key. While the majority of races at York here are lower class events, the feature Lyric Fillies’ Stakes holds Listed status and is in its 25th year after being first run in 2008. Here is the entire Friday night card:

York Ebor Festival

The most important York races today are in August, though, during the four-day Ebor Festival in the summer holidays. There are lots of quality races including three Group 1s taking place then, the Juddmonte International Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks for fillies and mares, and Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes for sprinters. The Ebor Handicap has the most prize money on offer for a Flat handicap in Europe, meanwhile. These are all the key York Ebor Festival races:

Ebor Festival Day 1

The opening day of the premier York races today, the Ebor Festival, contains the last major trial for the St Leger in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes. Another supporting event on the card is the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes for juveniles.

Headlining the action is the Juddmonte International with form lines tied in from other Group 1s throughout the summer such as the Coral Eclipse from Sandown Park races and the King George at Ascot. This is a look at all of the horse races on the card in more detail:

The penultimate day of Ebor Festival action is a busy one. The Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup is the feature race for stayers is often where those who contested a top level event at Goodwood races during the Glorious meeting go to next. There is also the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings.

The biggest of all sprints at York races today, the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, ties in Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood form lines. There are even runners who drop back in trip from the July Cup at Newmarket sometimes for this end-to-end dash down the Knavesmire. It’s one of the few pattern races open to racehorses of all ages. Nostrum, Strensall Stakes, York (26 August, 1:50)

Nostrum remains a horse of serious potential, so he appeals to put Glorious Goodwood disappointment behind him on soft ground with a return to quicker going now upped in trip for the extended 1m Group 3 Strensall Stakes on the final day of York’s Ebor Festival.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute in the Juddmonte silks, this three-year-old Kingman colt scored in this grade as a juvenile at Newmarket. The form of Nostrum’s Listed success on his belated reappearance there during the July Festival has been franked by the runner-up dead-heating at Salisbury and the third home going one better in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last Saturday.

Only soft ground lover Epictetus proved a length too good for him in the Thoroughbred Stakes earlier this month. Back on a faster surface, however, Nostrum is definitely one to fear with regular jockey Ryan Moore again booked for the ride.

Royal Hunt Cup hero Jimi Hendrix can give the warm favourite most to think about. Trained by Ralph Beckett, this Chelsea Thoroughbreds-owned four-year-old New Bay gelding was far from disgraced when third in the Group 2 Summer Mile back at Ascot. Faster ground should suit Jimi Hendrix better.

Of the rest, it’d be no surprise if in-form course specialist Spirit Dancer took his form to a new level after landing back-to-back handicaps. Richard Fahey is forced into running the six-year-old son of Frankel up in grade here as he followed-up on a facile course win with victory at Windsor in the Racing League.

Track specialists are always respected on the Knavesmire and Spirit Dancer surged three lengths clear when hitting the front before the furlong marker here on his penultimate outing. The drop back in trip might not be a problem for an older horse who is in the form of his life this summer.

Isaac Shelby E/W

Kinross, City Of York Stakes, York (26 August, 3:00)

Last year’s winner Kinross is a true 7f specialist, so appeals to confirm Glorious Goodwood form with Isaac Shelby and land the Group 2 City Of York Stakes on the final day of the Ebor Festival once again. Trained by Ralph Beckett, this six-year-old Kingman gelding is top-drawer over this unique distance.

Kinross is also 1lb better off at the weights with the re-opposing runner-up from the Lennox Stakes last time out. After success here 12 months ago, he went on to land the Park Stakes, Prix de la Foret and British Champions Sprint. That gives Kinross leading form claims and he’s impossible to oppose.

Sacred looks the biggest danger for trainer William Haggas and owners Cheveley Park Stud. This five-year-old mare by Exceed And Excel was only sixth in this race last year, but comes here fresher and arguably in even better form. Sacred was only beaten by a neck in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes when runner-up at Royal Ascot.

That was three places better than when held a length in that 12 months earlier. Sacred has won all three over her 7f starts since disappointing on the Knavesmire last year. With the yard and jockey Tom Marquand enjoying success at the meeting this term, she can give a much better account of herself.

Of the three-year-olds, Isaac Shelby looks the most reliable and a solid each way bet albeit off 1lb worse terms with Kinross. Trained by Brian Meehan, this Night Of Thunder colt was held by a neck with the hope being faster ground will bring about more improvement.

Unlike the market principals, Isaac Shelby could still be open to further progress. He deserves one last chance to prove himself against the best British horses over this distance. If Isaac Shelby doesn’t hit the frame, then almost the entire field will fancy their chances on the pick of their form.

Absurde E/W

Sweet William

Jackfinbar E/W

Adjuvant E/W

Absurde E/W, Ebor Handicap, York (26 August, 3:35)

Willie Mullins has a good hand against the favourite in the 1m 6f Ebor Handicap that headlines the fourth and final day of the eponymous festival at York. Royal Ascot runner-up Absurde appeals each way back on the level after a hurdles outing at Galway.

This five-year-old Fastnet Rock gelding chased home stable companion Vauban in the Copper Horse Handicap. The winner is Melbourne Cup bound and has since eased to a Group 3 success at Naas. Off 3lb higher, and with Frankie Dettori again in the saddle, Absurde could well go one better.

Sweet William has been favourite for the Ebor for a while now and everything has opened up nicely for John & Thady Gosden’s improving four-year-old. Owned by Normandie Stud, this son of Sea The Stars stays further and has won consecutive handicaps to get into the field.

Following his Newbury 2m win, Sweet William went in again at Glorious Goodwood in the Summer Handicap. The joint-trainers used that route successfully with Trawlerman as a stepping stone to the Ebor. Sweet William has just a 4lb penalty here, leaving him 4lb well-in to the race, so he’s obviously a well-treated improving horse.

The Mullins second string Jackfinbar is lightly-raced for his age and interesting. Although an eight-year-old, this son of Whipper has been built back up by his master handler after four years on the sidelines. Third in a Listed event on belated reappearance, Jackfinbar was a real eyecatcher that day with a nod to going back up in trip.

He was also far from disgraced when fourth in the Galway Festival, trying to concede a stone-and-a-half to useful dual purpose performer Brazil. The runner-up has since come out and scored over hurdles, while the third home won his previous start. Jackfinbar could make up for lost time under William Buick.

Adjuvant is 4lb better off at the weights with Sweet William from Goodwood, meanwhile, so could go well again at double figure odds. Trained by Michael Bell, this four-year-old New Bay gelding scored at Newmarket off 7lb lower than his current mark.

As Adjuvant was far from disgraced when fifth in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and when chasing home the favourite in the Summer Handicap, he should have place prospects once again. Kevin Stott now takes the ride. Real Dream and Scriptwriter are also on the extended shortlist for another cracking edition of the Ebor.
