Kelso Racecourse Fixtures & Events
Historians trace horse racing meetings at Kelso in the ceremonial county of Roxburghshire back to 1734 with one at Caverton Edge. The sport was also popular at Blakelaw but the Berrymoss site where the track is today opened in 1822. That means we’ve had events at Kelso Racecourse for 200 years now. The type of races held at this track changed in 1888.
Prior to that date, it was just Flat racing but the United Border Hunt then moved to the course. It’s been National Hunt action only ever since, right up to Kelso races today. The grandstand at the course is now a Listed building, erected when the track opened but designed by the famous Yorkshire architect John Carr.
About an hour’s drive southeast of Scotland capital, Edinburgh, down the A68, Musselburgh races are the nearest track to Kelso Racecourse. There are just two races with Class 1 status here. The Premier Kelso Hurdle, a Grade 2 novice hurdle over two-and-a-quarter miles, and the Premier Chase, a Listed steeplechase with a distance of almost three miles.
Configuration of Kelso Races Today
Left-handed, sharp and undulating, the hurdles course is particularly tight at Kelso. A full circuit of this more oblong than oval-shaped track is little more than a mile and a furlong round. There are only five flights on a full lap with two down the back straight, a cross hurdle before turning for home and then two more before the winning post.
The penultimate hurdle and fence, an open ditch, on each circuit is at the lowest point of Kelso Racecourse. After jumping the last on either track, there is a run-in of almost a quarter-of-a-mile and it’s uphill all the way. Steeplechases take place outside the hurdles course with a full lap being an extended mile-and-a-quarter.
There is a cross fence after the winning post before turning into the back straight where horses face a line of three jumps. There are two more down the side of the steeplechase course prior to the home bend. After the open ditch, there is a plain fence taken as the final one on a circuit. That makes eight in total on a complete lap.
Key Races at Kelso Today
Besides the Premier Kelso Hurdle for novices and the Premier Chase with Listed status, the Morebattle Hurdle is another of the famous Kelso races today. Both a conditions race and handicap at different times in its history, a bonus is often offered to any winner that goes to follow-up at the Cheltenham Festival and the winner doesn’t have to stick to hurdles either.
In 2021, The Shunter landed the Morebattle Hurdle and then the Plate Handicap Chase over fences. His exploits resulted in leading Irish owner JP McManus purchasing the horse. The Premier Chase has also become an unofficial Grand National trial, despite major differences between this track and Aintree. That shows the relevancy of Kelso races today to the major meetings.
Besides its big day on the last Saturday in February or first in March, there are plenty of other racedays at Kelso Racecourse including a dedicated Ladies Day and a post-Christmas card on 29th December. The only time of year that this track isn’t used is the summer months of June, July and August. There are meetings from September until May, so check all of the key races here in the table below:
