Arsenal host Newcastle on Saturday night. TNT Sports are broadcasting the game but it has an unusual kick-off time of 8pm instead of the traditional 12:30pm.
Why is the game being played at 8pm?
There has been many changes to the upcoming gameweek schedule. With the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, fixtures involving Chelsea and Liverpool are postponed or moved up to an earlier date.
Liverpool thrashed Luton 4-1 as their match was moved up to earlier in the week. Chelsea v Tottenham was supposed to be a Friday night game, but that match has yet to find a new date.
Due to Arsenal’s involvement in the Champions League, the game has changed it’s kick-off time from 12:30pm to 8pm. TNT Sports made the decision last summer that any team involved in away European fixtures would not have to take part in Saturday morning showdowns to help player welfare.
There have been many of examples of this change already this season in games involving Newcastle and Manchester United – both clubs had European commitments.
Arsenal v Newcastle
Thanks to Raheem Sterling and Chelsea, Manchester City dropped points which was huge for the title race. Arsenal will look to add to their five league wins in-a-row and add pressure to Liverpool and Manchester City who sit ahead of the Gunners.
A win for Arsenal would also add pressure to Eddie Howe. Newcastle have struggled with injuries, bans and FFP scares this season. St. James’ Park is no longer the fortress it was last season. But, Newcastle are still fighting for a European spot. They sit 8th in the table and are one point behind Brighton – 7th place would secure a Europa Conference League place.
