West Ham United’s technical director has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent days. With his name making headlines, we at SportsLens have taken a closer look and tried to find out: Who Is Tim Steidten?

According to reports, Steidten has emerged as a front-runner for Liverpool’s director of football position. Current recruitment chief Jorg Schmadtke will leave Anfield at the end of this month’s transfer window.

As a result, the club have begun searching for a replacement, with Steidten top of the shortlist. But with the backroom workings of most football clubs less publicised, many fans may not be too familiar with Steidten or his role for West Ham.

To answer any questions supporters might have, we’ve dug a little deeper into the man who could well be leaving the club before long.

Who Is Tim Steidten?

Born in Germany in 1979, Tim Steidten is a former professional footballer. After retiring from a career in the German lower divisions, the former midfielder took on back-room jobs with Bundesliga clubs Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen.

In July 2023, he was appointed as West Ham’s technical director. Steidten has been an influential figure at both West Ham and his previous clubs.

The 44-year-old was highly regarded after helping Leverkusen recruit the likes of Florian Wits, Jeremie Frimpong and Edmond Tapsoba.

Steidten was also at the centre of West Ham’s summer dealings which saw them bring in a number of marquee players.

But rumours have emerged of a rift between Steidten and manager David Moyes. They have not always seen eye-to-eye, often disagreeing over potential deals.

With Moyes reportedly entering fresh contract negotiations, a move to Liverpool could be tempting for Steidten.

Who Has Tim Steidten Signed For West Ham?

While involved in the entire recruitment process, it’s believed three summer deals can be credited predominantly to Steidten.

David Moyes’ main target was former Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. Moyes succesfully negotiated that deal, but it was Steidten who secured several others.

Mohamed Kudus, Edson Alvarez and Konstanos Mavropanos were his three picks. Kudus was in discussions with Chelsea before Steidten highjacked the deal.

The German helped persuade all three to sign for West Ham. His influence has been felt immensely during his short time with the club.

Those three signings have since played frequently, with Kudus among the top performers in the Premier League. The Ghanaian has scored 13 goals in all competitions, proving his worth repeatedly.

But with Steidten now being chased by Liverpool, this may well be his last window with the Irons.

Liverpool are also lining up a Jurgen Klopp replacement after the manager announced the end of his nine-year reign.

The German is stepping down at the end of the season, with former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso the current favourite according to the latest betting odds.
