Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is considered the early favourite to become the next Reds manager.

Liverpool Eye Alonso As Klopp Successor

As Jurgen Klopp prepares to leave Anfield at the end of the season, there is a feeling that ex-Liverpool man Alonso has emerged as an outstanding candidate to step in at such a precarious time.

The board have been aware of the German’s decision to step down at the end of the campaign since November, so they’ve had time to comb through their options.

Liverpool are more than aware of how clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal struggled to adapt to life following the departures of iconic managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, yet Alonso has come through at a perfect moment to be considered for the hot seat on Merseyside.

His appointment would satisfy the fanbase, giving Reds supporters an emotional attachment which would be in line with the club’s identity that has been built during the Klopp era.

Alonso has a good ongoing relationship with the current boss, which could come in helpful, but the most comforting factor should be evident in his remarkable results with Bayer Leverkusen this season.

The Spaniard has masterminded Die Schwartzroten to an unbeaten campaign thus far, and currently lead Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table. It’s been a exceptional season for the German top flight leaders with an impressive style of play to go alongside it.

Gerrard, Nagelsmann & De Zerbi Among Other Candidates

Steven Gerrard is another name that has previously been mentioned as a figure that might be ready to step in whenever Klopp leaves, however the timing of the change does not fit well following his underwhelming spell with Aston Villa, as well as his fresh new contract with Al-Ettifaq.

Julian Nagelsmann has also been talked about as a potential successor to Klopp, but there has been more concern about that over recent times and he is currently the manager of the German national side, albeit on a contract that expires in the summer.

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi is an interesting candidate for the role. Sources have so far hinted that the Seagulls are not concerned about the situation though, and do not expect him to leave in favour of a move to the North West.
