Ante Post Favourite Monbeg Genius Out Of Welsh Grand National
Monbeg Genius was popular in the ante post betting market but will now miss the race after a injury setback, despite being the recent Welsh Grand National favourite.
Jonjo O’Neill’s charge was the 5/1 favourite in the early betting stages, but has not been included in the most recent confirmation stage on Thursday.
The Cheltenham-based trainer was speaking on Monbeg Genius’ absence: “He’s not right. He’s got an abscess and won’t be ready in time. Unfortunately that’s racing and we’ll get him right before we think about where to go with him next.”
However, the 2010 Welsh Grand National-winning trainer could still be represented at Chepstow as Iron Bridge remains in contention at this stage less than a week until the race. O’Neill will be looking for his first triumph in the race in 13 years since Synchronised won.
Super Survivor The New Welsh Grand National Favourite
There has been plenty of changes in the betting after Thursday saw the Welsh Grand National field shorten down to 22. That has led to the Jamie Snowden-trained Super Survivor being the new favourite for the Chepstow race.
Super Survivor is yet to win since getting past the post first at this very meeting last year. He beat eventual Grand National eighth Mister Coffey trained by Nicky Henderson. That is not bad form considering the monster performance Henderson’s charge put in at Aintree.
The Jamie Snowdon yard is going very well at the minute too and they’ll be hoping to land another big field handicap when going to Chepstow. Already winning the Coral Gold Cup with Datsalrightgino at the start of the month, there will be great confidence heading into the Welsh Grand National.
Gavin Sheehan will most likely partner Super Survivor as well, which is always a positive given the jockey’s solid 20% strike rate this season.
He guided Datsalrightgino at Newbury and most recently lifted Fugitig to Paddy Power Gold Cup glory at Cheltenham. It’s fair to say Sheehan is in fine form and that will give Super Survivor backers lots of hope.
How Do Favourites Get On In The Welsh Grand National?
It is not always easy for a favourite to justify their strong backing in a big field like this and market leaders haven’t done too well in the race in recent times. Just three SP favourites have triumphed in the last 12 runnings.
The last Welsh Grand National favourite to win was in 2020 when Secret Reprieve won in the hands of Adam Wedge for trainer Evan Williams (see below)
