Another busy transfer window finally came to a close last week, with several key incomings and outgoings from the English top flight. And now that all 20 squads have been finalised, or are close to being finalised, we at SportsLens are taking a look at who has the most valuable squad in the Premier League, and are ranking the squads based on market value.

Figures courtesy of Transfermarkt.

1. Manchester City – €1.18bn

Unsurprisingly, treble-winners Manchester City top the list of most valuable Premier League squads in 2023/24 with a squad value of €1.18bn.

City have been fairly active in the transfer market since lifting the Champions League back in June, acquiring the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes, whilst Ilkay Gundogan, Cole Palmer, Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have all gone the other way departing for pastures new.

It won’t come as a shock to anyone that Erling Haaland remains City’s most valuable player at €180m, followed in second by Phil Foden (€110m), then by Rodri (€90m), Bernardo Silva (€80m), and Ruben Dias (€80m) to form their top five most valuable assets.

2. Arsenal – €1.11bn

Last season’s runners up find themselves in second once more, but this time through having the second most valuable squad on the British Isles, valued at €1.11bn.

Mikel Arteta finally got his man in the form of Declan Rice at the beginning of the transfer window, adding a huge chunk of market value to the squad, but has also signed Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya, whilst Folarin Balogun and Granit Xhaka are the most notable players to depart.

The Gunners’ most valuable man is Hale End product Bukayo Saka, who is valued at €120m, followed by club-captain Martin Odegaard (€90m), Declan Rice (€90m), Gabriel Martinelli (€80m), and Gabriel Jesus (€75m) to make up the top five.

3. Chelsea – €925.5m

By far and away the most active club in the last few transfer windows, Chelsea have the third most valuable Premier League squad in 2023/24 with a market value of €925.5m.

Since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge in May of last year, the Blues have spent over a reported €1bn in just three transfer windows – more than any other club in the world.

This summer was no different to the previous two transfer windows, with the marquee arrivals of Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, as well as another six new permanent arrivals.

Several figures went the other way too, with Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Christian Pulisic, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and many more departed on permanent deals this summer.

4. Manchester United – €882.3m

Having spent over a reported €200m this summer, Manchester United have the fourth most valuable squad in the Premier League based on players’ market values.

The Red Devils added to their ranks with Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon, but said goodbye to Dean Henderson, Anthony Elanga, Fred, and several others.

In comparison to their spend, they received just over €50m in fees this summer, seeing their transfer record for the summer sit at just over -€150m.

Marcus Rashford leads in terms of market value at €80m, followed by Bruno Fernandes (€75m), Mason Mount (€60m), Antony (€60m), and World Cup-winner Lisandro Martinez (€50m).

5. Liverpool – €827.3m

€55m shy of Manchester United, Liverpool sit in fifth place with a squad value of €827.3m after a relatively busy summer of transfers.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo have all joined on permanent deals, whilst six players have departed in the form of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Reds’ most valuable player is Colombian winger Luis Diaz (€75m), with Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alexis Mac Allister, and Darwin Nunez all in second – valued at €65m.

6. Tottenham – €689.3m

Spurs have started the season very well under Ange Postecoglou, and have spent almost €250m in the market, which has them in sixth place in the Premier League’s most valuable squads.

Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski made their moves to north London permanent over the summer, joined by new faces James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, and deadline day acquisition Brennan Johnson.

Despite Johnson being the most expensive signing of the lot, it’s Maddison and Cristian Romero who are Spurs’ most valuable players at €60m, followed by Heung-min Son (€50m), Kulusevski (€50m), and Richarlison (€48m).

7. Aston Villa – €607.7m

The Villans look like a team transformed since the arrival of ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery, and have a Conference League campaign to look forward to, with the group stages kicking off in just a few weeks time.

In terms of their squad, academy youngster Cameron Archer is the only notable departure, whilst Moussa Diaby has joined from Bayer Leverkusen, as well as Pau Torres from Villarreal, Nicolo Zaniolo from Galatasaray, Youri Tielemans from Leicester, and Clement Lenglet from Barcelona.

And it’s Diaby who tops their list of most valuable players at €50m, followed by fellow summer signing Torres (€45m), and then Jacob Ramsey (€42m), Ollie Watkins (€40m), Douglas Luiz (€40m).

8. Newcastle – €598m

Perhaps a surprise to many seeing them behind Aston Villa in the list, but with a squad value of €598 – it’s Newcastle who have the eighth most valuable squad in the Premier League.

The Magpies qualified for the Champions League last term, which will see them play in the competition’s group stage for the first time since 2002/03, and they’ve strengthened their squad over the summer in preparation.

Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are the key arrivals that add further depth to Eddie Howe’s squad, whilst Allan Saint-Maximin has opted to join Saudi side Al-Ahli and Chris Wood has made his move to Nottingham Forest a permanent one.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes remain the club’s most valuable players at €70m, with Tonali (€50m), Sven Botman (€45m), and Joelinton (€42m) making up the remainder of the top five.

9. West Ham – €443.15m

Last year’s Conference League winners West Ham come in at ninth place in our list, boasting a squad value of €443.15m – over €150m fewer than that of Newcastle’s in eighth place.

The Hammers lost their most valuable player over the summer, with club-captain Declan Rice departing for Arsenal, followed out the door by Gianluca Scamacca, Nikola Vlasic, Arthur Masuaku, Manuel Lanzini and Flynn Downs (loan), whilst James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos came through the door, as well as Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez – both joining from Ajax.

Lucas Paqueta is now the most valuable player in David Moyes squad at €45m, with Kudus in second at €40m, and Ward-Prowse and Jarrod Bowen level on €38m.

10. Nottingham Forest – €400.58m

Having flirted with relegation for the majority of last season, Nottingham Forest and their extensive squad of players come in at 10th in the list of most valuable Premier League squads.

The Midlands-club spent over €120m this summer, adding a whopping 14 new players the their squad, whilst 21 went the other way – either permanently or on loan. Deadline day wasn’t particularly kind to them either, as they lost their local boy Brennan Johnson to Tottenham, with Callum Hudson-Odoi arriving from Chelsea – seemingly as his replacement.

Despite Forest gaining a fee of aver €50m for Johnson, he wasn’t actually their most valuable player. That mantle goes to Morgan Gibbs-White at €40m, followed by Ibrahm Sangare (€35m), Danilo (€28m), Taiwo Awoniyi (€25m), and Neco Williams (€20m).

11. Brighton – €380.3m

Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton would’ve been expected by many to at least be in the top 10 most valuable squads in the Premier League, but with a value of €380.3m – they come in at 11th.

Valuable assets in Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Robert Sanchez all left in the summer, but Joao Pedro, Carlos Baleba, Bart Verbruggen, Igor, Ansu Fati and several others arrived at the Amex – leaving the Seagulls with a positive transfer record of +€89m this summer.

Loan signing Fati is unsurprisingly the most valuable player in Brighton’s squad at €35m, with Pervis Estupinan, Kaoru Mitoma, and Joao Pedro all level in second at €32m, followed by Irish starlet Evan Ferguson at €30m to make up the top five.

12. Brentford – €365m

After a fairly tame transfer window with just over €64m spent, and just over €10m received in fees, Brentford hold the 12th most expensive squad in the Premier League in 2023/24.

Nathan Collins and Mark Flekken were the key permanent arrivals, whilst Kevin Schade made his loan permanent, and Everton forward Neal Maupay joined on loan, with David Raya being the only departure of note – joining Arsenal on loan.

Suspended Ivan Toney remains Thomas Frank’s most valuable player at €35m, alongside Kevin Mbeumo, followed by Rico Henry (€28m), and Schade and Aaron Hickey (€25m).

13. Everton – €359.25m

The summer arrivals of Beto, Chermiti, and Arnaut Danjuma see relegation-threatened Everton boast the 13th most expensive Premier League squad at €359.25m.

Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean both left permanently, earning the Toffees over €50m, with several other players departing either on free transfers, loans, or fees fewer than €10m.

Their breakout star from last season Amadou Onana remains the most valuable player within the squad at €45m, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Danjuma, Vitaliy Mykolenko, and Beto all level at second – valued at €25m.

14. Bournemouth – €337m

The Cherries have had a fairly busy summer, acquiring nine new players with a spend of over €125m, however their income from transfer fees was very minimal at around €1.5m.

Nevertheless, Andoni Iraola’s squad is the 14th most valuable in the English top flight, with Dango Ouattara marked as the most valuable player (€25m), followed by Hamed Junior Traore, Marcos Senesi and summer loan signing from Leeds United Luis Sinisterra – who are all valued at €22m.

15. Crystal Palace – €333.45m

Roy Hodgson’s Eagles have had a very quiet transfer window in comparison to some of their rivals, receiving no income from transfer fees, whilst spending just shy of €40m with just four new faces coming through the door.

Notably though, club-captain Wilfried Zaha departed for pastures new, joining Galatasaray on a free, with Jefferson Lerma, Rob Holding, Dean Henderson, and Matheus Franca all arriving at Selhurst Park.

Eberechi Eze (€40m) and Michael Olise (€38m) are the two most valuable players in Palace’s squad, with Marc Guehi and Cheick Doucoure level in third on €35m, and Joachim Andersen up next at €30m – making up the top five.

16. Fulham – €295.9m

Marco Silva’s squad comes in as the 16th most valuable in the Premier League, following the arrivals of Raul Jimenez, Timothy Castagne, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi over the summer.

Star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic said his goodbyes to the club though, opting for a big money move to Saudi Arabia, with several other faces departing on free transfers.

Joao Palhinha was close to joining Bundesliga side Bayern Munich, but for the deal to fall through – and so, he remains the Cottagers’ most valuable player at €40m.

17. Wolves – €289.38m

Wolves’ outgoings have been much more significant than that of their incomings this summer, with only clubs promoted from the Championship last term boasting a lesser squad value.

Tommy Doyle has joined on loan from Manchester City, as well as Matt Doherty on a free from Atletico, however Matheus Nunes has headed to the Etihad, Ruben Neves has joined Al-Hilal, and Nathan Collins has switched the Midlands for the capital by joining Brentford.

Skipper Max Kilman is their most valuable asset at €30m, with Pedro Neto following at €28m, and Matheus Cunha (€25m) and Rayan Ait-Nouri (€22m) being the only others valued at over €20m.

18. Burnley – €229.55m

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley come in at 18th – the first of the three in the relegation zone, with all three being the promoted sides from the Championship last season.

The Clarets have gained just over €3m in fees, whilst they’ve spent over €110m on the likes of James Trafford, Aaron Ramsey, Sander Berge, Dara O’Shea and several move.

And it’s summer signing Berge who tops the list of most valuable players at €20m, with Josh Brownhill in second at €18m, followed by Jordan Beyer and Mike Tresor, who are valued at €16m.

19. Sheffield United – €135.68m

Paul Heckingbottom’s side have secured ten new signings this summer, with seven being permanently and three on loan, and have spent around €65m.

Key departures in Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge have lowered the Blades’ overall squad value, with just five of their players boasting a market value of €10m or higher.

Those five are Anel Ahmedhodzic (€20m), Luke Thomas (€12m), Cameron Archer (€12m), James McAtee (€12m), and Auston Trusty (€10m).

20. Luton Town – €85.3m

Bottom of the pile will be a surprise to no one – it’s last year’s Championship play-off winners Luton Town, who boast a squad value of €85.3m, quite the contrast to Manchester City’s €1.18bn at the top of the list.

The Hatters have failed to secure any transfer fees over the summer, with all departures being either on loan, or free transfers, whilst they’ve spent around €22.75m on 12 incoming players.

Arsenal loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga is their most valuable player at €15m, and is the only one valued at more than €10m, with the next most valuable player being Ryan Giles (€9m), who joined from Wolves in July.
