Who could replace Nick Pope at Newcastle? David de Gea is one name who is being considered after the Magpies goalkeeper dislocated his shoulder against Manchester United on match week 14 of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
De Gea – perhaps surprisingly – is still without a club after leaving the Red Devils in the summer after 12 years of service at Old Trafford but he could be in line for a return to England’s top flight with Eddie Howe’s side on the prowl. Here at SportsLens, we take a look at Newcastle’s January transfer targets.
David de Gea To Newcastle?
David de Gea to Newcastle has gathered momentum recently with Nick Pope ruled out until April and the Spanish stopper would make an excellent addition to Eddie Howe’s side, with Newcastle’s January signings more likely than most with their current injuries.
The most obvious stumbling block would be De Gea’s expected high wage demands. It was thought he was earning £375,000 per-week in his final years at Manchester United.
If Howe was to make a move, he would perhaps only do so if De Gea accepted a smaller wage but it would be a decent coup if he could pull it off.

Aaron Ramsdale To Newcastle?
Newcastle’s transfer rumours will be rife and much has been made of Aaron Ramsdale’s faltering Arsenal career and a move to the Magpies – whether permanently or on loan – could help reignite the fire in his belly.
Ramsdale had recently been linked with Wolves and he has found game time hard to come by since David Raya made the No 1 spot his own at the Emirates Stadium, so a January move away from the club looks more than likely.
The England goalkeeper had a decent campaign in 2022/23 and would be an almost like-for-like replacement for the injured Pope.
Hugo Lloris To Newcastle?
Newcastle’s latest transfer news could see them make a move for Hugo Lloris, who is still on the books at Tottenham Hotspur but has been told he doesn’t feature at all in manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans in north London.
A 2018 FIFA World Cup winner with France, Lloris has an abundance of Premier League experience and could potentially make a brilliant temporary solution at Newcastle.
Lloris is 36 years-old so he certainly has a decent season or two in him. If Howe does pursue him, it looks more than likely they could sign him as Pope’s replacement at Newcastle.
