As we race towards the festive horse racing period it’s all about the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. So, with that in mind we take a look at who are the oldest and youngest runners in the race in 2023 and highlight what the best King George horse age is – based on the recent trends and stats.

The Oldest Kempton King George Chase Runner 2023 Is Frodon

FRODON will be the elder statesmen of the King George runners 2023 as the Paul Nicholls-trained 11 year-old looks to win back the title he won in 2020 (watch below).

With no other horses aged 11 in the race, Frodon will be the clear veteran 2023 King George runner in the field and if successful would become the oldest winner of the Kempton race since Kauto Star in 2011.

Other recent 11 year-old King George winners have been Edredon Bleu in 2003 and a certain Desert Orchid in 1990 – so Frodon would certainly be in good company.

The 11 year-old would also be looking to become the first horse to win back his King George crown since Long Run won the race in 2010 and again in 2012.

Frodon is also trained by Paul Nicholls, who is the winning-most King George trainer with 13 past successes.

The oldest ever King George VI Chase winner remains Southern Hero, who won the first ever running back in 1937.

While since the race was first run there have been just eight King George VI winners aged in double-figures.

The Youngest Kempton King George Runner 2023 Is The Real Whacker

This year’s 2023 King George VI Chase runners sees the youngest entries at 7 years-old – The Real Whacker.

The good news though is that 7 year-olds have a fair recent record in the King George. Last year’s winner – Bravemansgame – was aged 7 while the 2019 hero Clan Des Obeaux was also aged 7.

Since 2000, there have been eight 7 year-old winners – which works out at a decent 35% strike-rate.

What Is The Best King George Horse Age To Look For?

When looking at the King George Chase trends these tell us the best age to look for is 8 or younger. 17 of the last 21 (81%) have ticked this age range, including last year’s winner Bravemansgame.

In fact, ALL of the last 11 King George winners fell into this age range.

With an 8 year-old winning five of the last 9 renewals of the big Boxing Day race, then this 56% return over this period suggest horses aged 8 are the ones to also look out for.

The 2023 King George runners aged 8 are – Bravemansgame & Hewick.
