New injury-time rules and seemingly higher stakes have seen comebacks aplenty this season, but which Premier League team has won the most points after scoring first?
Which Premier League Team Has Won The Most Points After Scoring First This Season?
It’s the league leaders – Arsenal – that top this particular stat with a whopping 59 points from winning positions. The Gunners have taken the lead 22 times this season, going on to win in all but three of those fixtures.
They’ve only lost once from a winning position; a 2-1 defeat away to Fulham in December. In a football landscape dominated by number and figures, this is as good a stat as any that shows why Arsenal could win the league.
With 10 games left to play in the title run-in, Arsenal will need to maintain this winning mentality and continue scoring early.
How do the other title rivals compare?
Manchester City and Liverpool are closely behind Arsenal in this stat. Manchester City have yet to be beaten this season when they score first. They’ve taken the lead 19 times – winning 14 and drawing four. This has earned them 46 points.
The same goes for Liverpool. The Reds have been noted for their comebacks this season – scoring the most second-half goals of any side – but their record for taking the lead is just as good. Liverpool have taken the lead 15 times – winning 14 and drawing once – handing them 43 points.
Arsenal’s Weakness
On the flip side, when Arsenal go 1-0 down, they struggle to bounce back. It’s now three defeats, two draws and one win from losing positions for Arsenal.
Luckily, they don’t find themselves in losing positions a lot but Arteta will be concerned about his side’s resilience. The Gunners have some tough fixtures coming up; including trips to Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United.
Those are games that Arsenal could easily find themselves getting beat in but will they work hard enough to bounce back from the setbacks?
Their title rivals, Liverpool, have gained the most points from losing positions this season – again an equally impressive mark of a champion.
Kai Havertz’s late goal against Brentford is a glimpse of the Arsenal side we witnessed last year, but their new-found preference for racing into leads and dominating opposition teams appears to be working.
