When Did Newcastle Last Play In The Champions League?

The Magpies are flying under Eddie Howe and he led them to a fourth placed finish last season securing a long-awaited return to the Champions League.

It has been 20 years (2003-04) since the side last played in the competition. However, they did not make the group stage after being knocked out by Partizan Belgrade in the third qualifying round.

The last time they played in the group stage was the season prior to that. Newcastle managed to make it past the third qualifying round that year when beating Bosnian side Zeljeznicar. They then got drawn in a group alongside Juventus, Dynamo Kiev and Feyenoord. The side were involved in a famous tie against the latter, where they had to win and did it dramatically late on in the game.

Back in the day, there was two group stages in the Champions League and Newcastle successfully made it through to the second one, but faced tougher opposition in Barcelona, Inter and Bayer Leverkusen. Unfortunately, they were eliminated though and did not make the knockout stages.
