It’s been more than ten years since the last Bayern Munich trophyless season, but they are now staring down the barrel of a season without silverware.
Harry Kane could be headed towards yet another trophyless campaign after his Bayern Munich side were thrashed by Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend.
Leverkusen were already two points ahead going into the game, but extended their lead to five with the win.
Goals from Josip Stanisic, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong earned Leverkusen an emphatic, 3-0 victory. Xabi Alonso’s side are still unbeaten across all competitions, winning 17 from 24 league games so far.
The defeat leaves Bayern facing the real possibility of missing out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in 11 seasons.
Although still in the UEFA Champions League, they were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round. A 2-1 defeat away to third-tier FC Saarbrucken marked one of the biggest cup upsets in German history.
And having lost the German Super Cup to RB Leipzig in August, they are running out of trophies to go for.
It’s been many years since Bayern went without a trophy, but how long ago was it?
When Did Bayern Munich Last Go Trophyless?
Bayern are serial winners, and have dominated the Bundesliga this century. Winning the league for 11 years straight, it’s usually a foregone conclusion.
But in 2011/12, they finished runners-up in the league and DFB-Pokal. They then lost the Champions League final to Chelsea in their own stadium at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern’s recent monopoly on German football is even more impressive when put into context. The 33-time champions have won a third of all their titles ever in this current 11-year run.
They have also won 20 German Cups, ten German Super Cups and the League Cup half a dozen times.
In Europe, they’ve won six European Cups/Champions Leagues, two Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, a UEFA Cup/Europa League and the Cup Winners Cup.
Has Harry Kane Ever Won A Trophy?
If we do have a Bayern Munich Trophyless season, it would only add to the unfortunate narrative around Harry Kane.
Having spent years leading a Tottenham side that seem doomed to never win anything, he finally took the plunge and left for a European giant and what seemed like guaranteed silverware.
After all, who could have predicted this would be the first year in 12 seasons that Bayern have looked unlikely to win the Bundesliga?
Sadly, though he’s won numerous personal accolades, Kane is yet to win a senior trophy. A three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, he was also top scorer at the 2018 World Cup.
But team honours have eluded him, and could well continue to damage his otherwise excellent footballing CV.
