Although West Ham’s £120m pre-window evaluation of Declan Rice wasn’t quite met, the Hammers will still receive a total of £105m as and when contracts are officially signed with Arsenal.

The captain’s departure signals an interesting moment for West Ham. Yes, they have lost one of the best midfield prospects in world football, but the renumeration they can expect to receive should give them ample opportunity to replace him, and then some.

Fulham’s Palhinha has been touted as perhaps the most suitable man to fill that void since the start of the window. The Portuguese international was picked up by Fulham only last summer, but this hasn’t stopped a number of clubs from registering their interest.

That is according to the Guardian, who report that the club have begun drawing up a host of names who could be on interest as they look to revamp the midfield early in the window.

With Palhinha only joining last season, he would come at the most significant cost of any of the names on the supposed six-man shortlist, with the Cottagers demanding a fee of £50m-plus.

Elsewhere, the most affordable, and maybe the accessible comes in the shape of Juventus’ Denis Zakaria.

The Swiss international spent last season on loan at Chelsea where he featured sporadically due to a string of injuries, but no doubt impressed both physically and technically.

An initial loan deal with an option to buy appeals to those at West Ham, who would be free to bring in another name in the meantime.

Of the others, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse has long been linked with a move to East London, although he isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Rice.

Ajax’s Edson Alvarez was poised to join Borussia Dortmund last month before the deal collapsed, meaning they could reignite their interest in the Mexican.

Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Everton’s Amadou Onana have also been tracked.
