Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has shared his emotional response to Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of leaving the club at the end of the season.

In the aftermath of Klopp’s bombshell decision to step down as Liverpool manager after nearly nine years, Van Dijk expressed the difficulty of coming to terms with the news.

In an interview via the club’s social media platforms, Van Dijk said, “It’s a hard one to take, because the manager means so much for us—to me, to the club, to the whole Premier League, I think.

“But he made the decision for him and his family. It was always going to be a tough one, and it was definitely the case.”

Despite the emotional blow, Van Dijk emphasised the team’s commitment to staying focused on their objectives, stating, “He told us in private, of course, and all of us were together. Like I said, it’s a hard one to take, but our mindset is to focus on business.

“We have a lot of targets still to achieve this year, and why not finish the season on a high and together with celebrations for the boss as well?”

Klopp’s departure will mark the end of a highly successful era for Liverpool, with the former Borussia Dortmund manager securing triumphs in the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, as well as guiding them to three Champions League finals, clinching the prestigious title once.

As Klopp aims to steer Liverpool to another Premier League title this season, the Reds currently sit atop the table, holding a five-point advantage over reigning champions Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
