The Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes might still be referred to by many as the Racing Post Trophy, but it’s a race the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard have targeted with a lot of success over the years – winning the prize 10 times. The Ballydoyle maestro has several entries again for Saturday’s Doncaster Group One – let’s take a look.

12 months ago, we saw trainer Aidan O’Brien win the gold medal for a remarkable tenth time – on this occasion with Luxembourg, who went onto land this season’s Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien Has Won The Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes 10 Times
Anything trainer Aidan O’Brien runs in the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes has to be respected – he’s won the Doncaster race 10 times, including again 12 months ago.
The first success for O’Brien came back in 1997 when jockey Michael Kinane guided home his Saratoga Springs and he didn’t have to wait long before making a name for himself in the race – winning the 1999 running with Aristotle, the 2001 with High Chaparral and 2022 renewal with Brian Boro.
St Nicholas Abbey was O’Brien’s next Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes winner in 2009 and then added Camelot (2011), who also went onto win the 2012 Epsom Derby. Kingsbarn took the race the following year in 2012 and then his more recent winners in the Doncaster race were Saxon Warrior (2017), Magna Grecia (2018) and, the already mentioned, Luxembourg 12 months ago (watch below)
O’Brien Has 8 Runners Entered At This Stage
- Adelaide River
- Auguste Rodin
- Covent Garden
- Espionage
- Greenland
- Hiawatha
- Salt Lake City
- Victoria Road
Auguste Rodin Will Be Popular For O’Brien If Running
At this stage, Aidan O’Brien has many entries, but we can expect this number to whittle down as we draw nearer to the race day on Saturday.
However, the bookies are taking no chances with his Deep Impact colt AUGUSTE RODIN, who has been installed as the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes favourite.
This juvenile has gone into many notebooks after winning two of his three starts, including last time out at Leopardstown in the Group Two Champions Juvenile Stakes (watch below). He also holds an entry for the 2023 Epsom Derby, where he’s @ 10/1 with BetUK.
Did You Know? Trainer John Gosden Has NEVER Won The Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes
Away from the Aidan O’Brien runners, it’s trainer John Gosden that has the next best two in the betting for the 2022 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes, but surprisingly he’s yet to win this Group One prize!
Gosden will be hoping to put that right this year with two possible runners in Arrest and Epictetus, who are prominent in the betting too.
Arrest has won his last two and was very impressive at Ffos Las last time out, albeit at odd of 1/6, while Epictetus was a close second in the G3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month (watch below) and on that form would certainly have a chance.

Often A Good Guide To Next Season’s Classics
In recent years, Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes has been a good pointer ahead of the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby the following season.
Last year’s winner Luxembourg went onto run third in the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket the next season, while we’ve actually had three of the last five Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes winners take the 2,000 Guineas.
We’ve also had three of the last 20 Vertem Futurity Stakes winners go onto glory in the Epsom Derby the next season, with the most recent Camelot, who won both races in 2011 and 2012. Motivator and Authorized were two other recent horses to win both the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes and the Epsom Derby.
