The Premier League is reportedly looking into potential changes to the technology available to referees from next season, after a slew of mistakes over the course of the season has seen VAR controversy become a hotly debated topic.
This is according to the The Athletic, who reported that the league is recommending the instalment of four cameras placed just outside each penalty box, in order to assist with offside calls and further improve the existing Hawk-Eye system.
There is also a suggestion that semi-automated offside technology will be trialled from next season, similar to the system used at the Qatar World Cup last year.
The Premier League has been tarnished by VAR controversy this season, and according to an independent panel report released in December, comprised of former players and officials, as many as six VAR decisions had been deemed to be wrong.
Instances including the Ivan Toney’s wrongly allowed goal for Brentford against Arsenal, as well as a wrongly disallowed goal for Brighton in their meeting with Crystal Palace in February, have only added to the figure.
The hope is that an update to the technology will help to eliminate any doubt over calls from next season. The additional cameras will help to provide a more accurate angle where officials can triangulate using all the footage available, particularly with some Premier League grounds making it impossible for hand-operated cameras in certain parts of the stadium.
Contentious offside decisions are hoping to be eradicated next season, but controversy still remains in relation to the handball law, which can also be checked using VAR.
For example, the gameweek just passed saw Nottingham Forest denied a penalty for what appeared to be a handball from Harry Maguire during their 2-0 defeat against Manchester United.

Manager Steve Copper said after the game: “It’s another big moment that is going to have scrutiny on VAR and obviously there’s been a lot of not positive decisions over the past few weeks.
“It’s not the reason why we lost the game – although it could have been a penalty and a second yellow for Harry Maguire, we could have scored the penalty and gone one up.
“I’m not gonna sit here and say it’s the reason why we didn’t win today but it does [have a big impact] to be fair, I’m biting my tongue here because I don’t want to use this as why we’re in the league position we’re in and why we’ve lost the game – it’s not – but for me it’s a bad error.”
