Train drivers are set to strike on the day of the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

The union today confirmed the action for Saturday June 3, saying that Avanti West Coast who run trains from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston is one of the 16 train operating companies affected.

Thousands of City and United fans would have been planning to take the train from up north to the capital for the Wembley showpiece. Unfortunately, that can’t happen now so fans will have to look for an alternative solution.

City dismantled Sheffield United in a 3-0 win in the semi-finals thanks to a Riyad Mahrez hat-trick. Meanwhile United beat Brighton on penalties after a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes.

The final has already faced logistical issues after it was brought forward to 3pm from 5:30pm over safety concerns raised by the Metropolitan Police.

Of course there’s other options of transport for the thousands coming from Manchester, however many would have already booked their train in advance. There’s an option of travelling via car but it would cost a lot more in fuel, parking and more. So, calls have been made for both clubs to aid supporters in any way they can.

There’s also an option of coaches – which a lot would be running anyway. However, with 30,000 tickets expected to be sold by both clubs, there’s only so many coaches that will be available to make the 4-5 hour journey down the country.

With the FA Cup final just over a month away, hopefully for the fans’ sake something can be sorted out.
