Tottenham are believed to have reached a verbal agreement of an initial £17.2million fee with Empoli to sign goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario this summer.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Empoli over the transfer of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The agreement if for an initial fee worth around £17.2million, with Spurs expected to submit a formal bid on Thursday, and Empoli have indicated that it will be accepted.

Bonuses are expected to be part of the deal, so the initial fee will likely rise in the future.

Vicario joined Empoli back in 2021 from Cagliari, initially on loan, and has established himself as a top level Italian goalkeeper since.

Spurs’ interest in Vicario comes amid the likely departure of club captain Hugo Lloris, who has publicly stated that he wants to leave the club in favour of a fresh challenge.

The north London club have also been heavily linked with a move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, who is expected to depart this summer.

Raya has just one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium, and has long been linked with a move away from the club.

However, the Bees are holding out for a fee of around £40million. Tottenham are said to be reluctant to match Brentford’s valuation, and they now look set to settle for Vicario.

An unnamed ‘highly respected Serie A goalkeeping coach’ spoke to Sky Sports News ahead of Vicario’s proposed move to the Premier League.

“In my opinion he’s the best Italian goalkeeper right now, but may need time to adjust to the Premier League.” he said.

“He’s evolved fantastically in the past 12 months. He’s very consistent and never makes big mistakes.

“He is good with his feet, but not spectacular, because he’s aware of the risks of playing out.

“For Tottenham, he’s not yet Hugo Lloris, but has a similar style.”
