Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is set to miss the rest of the 2022/23 campaign after rupturing his ACL on Saturday.

The Uruguayan was forced off after 65 minutes in Spurs’ 4-1 loss to Leicester City, with the club now confirming his ACL injury.

“We can confirm that Rodrigo Bentancur has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.” Spurs said in a statement.

“[He] will be out of action for the remainder of the campaign.

“The midfielder will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

Bentancur had initially given Spurs the lead against the Foxes, before a total collapse from Antonio Conte’s side.

His injury came as a result of a collision with Nampalys Mendy. Oxygen and a stretcher was provided for the 25-year-old, but he was able to walk off the field without it.

The midfielder has six goals and two assists for Conte’s side this season, but will now join Hugo Lloris and Yves Bissouma on the treatment table.

He was also a part of Uruguay’s World Cup squad, starting all three group matches, before failing to advance to the knockout-stage.

It comes as a major blow for Tottenham ahead of their round-of-16 Champions League tie against AC Milan on Tuesday, with fellow midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also missing out. The Dane is suspended for the tie, having picked up his third yellow-card of the competition in their final group-stage match against Lyon.

Champions League betting sites have Spurs priced at around 2/1 to overcome Milan in the first-leg, with the Italian side priced at around 29/10 for victory.
