Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a period of relative ‘success’ in recent years without spending lavishly in the transfer market but of course, their wait for a major trophy continues to go on.
Spurs have finished 4th or higher in five of the last eight Premier League seasons which has now seen them labelled as one of the ‘big six’ clubs in England’s top flight.
The north Londoners have often signed players who are perhaps unheard of and nurture them into world class talents. Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Heung Min-Son all spring to mind but who is Tottenham’s record signing and where did he join from?
Tottenham Record Signing
Tottenham Hotspur’s record signing is the £54m that was forked out for the services of Tanguy Ndombele in the summer of 2019. Ndombele’s transfer fee indicated Spurs were really stepping up in terms of spending big but unfortunately, the Frenchman’s move from Lyon failed to pay dividends. Ndombele had a few notable appearances for the Lilywhites but in the long run, he struggled to settle in north London.
Perhaps Nbombele’s failure to live up to his hefty price tag saw Tottenham reevaluate their strategy in the transfer market. Spurs record signing was shipped out on loan in 2022 to former club Lyon and also spent time at Napoli in Serie A, he can currently be seen sporting the colours of Turkish club Galatasaray. The Super Lig side have an option to make the deal permanent for €15m.

Spurs Most Expensive Signings
Besides the record-capture of Tanguy Ndombele, who are Spurs’ most expensive signings? Richarlison cost the north Londoners £52.2m in the summer of 2022 from Premier League side Everton. He has also failed to live up to his price tag so far but is showing signs he is on the right path, netting seven goals in 18 appearances in all competitions in 2023/24.
Brennan Johnson joined for £47.5m in the summer of 2023 and has made a bright start to his career in north London after signing from Nottingham Forest. 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Cristian Romero looks a sound acquisition at £44.3m, despite his disciplinary issues. The Argentine has fitted into new boss Ange Postecoglou’s defence very well in 2023/24, after initially joining the club on loan in 2021.

Latest Tottenham Transfer Rumours
The latest Tottenham transfer rumours have seen the Lilywhites linked with a number of players ahead of the 2024 January transfer window. The most likely signings will come in defence, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite hotly tipped to join in the new year.
We’ve identified other Spurs January transfer targets here, but there will be many names thrown in to the hat as the north Londoners try to add reinforcements after suffering a number of injuries and suspensions at the back end of 2023. If Ange Postecoglou can add to their ranks sensibly, European football will be a guarantee in 2024.
