10: Pele and Neymar (Brazil) – 77 goals each
Tied for tenth place are Brazilian legends Neymar and Pele with 77 goals each.
In Brazil’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Croatia in December, Neymar equalled Pele’s record with a 77th goal for the Seleção in his 124th appearance.
It only took Pele 92 games to score 77 goals, achieving the feat in a 14-year span between 1957 and 1971.
9: Hussein Saeed (Iraq) and Robert Lewandowski (Poland) – 78 goals each
Hussein Saeed scored 78 goals in 137 appearances for Iraq between 1976 and 1990. Saeed is widely considered as one of the greatest Iraqi footballers of all-time.
Saeed led his side to World Cup qualification in 1986 but was later removed from the squad due to injury and Iraq were knocked out in the group stage.
Tied with Saeed at ninth place is Robert Lewandowski. A full international since 2008, Lewandowski has represented Poland at Euro 2012, 2016 and 2020 alongside the World Cup in 2018 and 2022.
With 78 goals in 138 appearances, the Barcelona striker is undoubtedly one of the greatest international players ever.
8: Godfrey Chitalu (Zambia) – 79 goals
Godfrey Chitalu is considered one of the greatest African footballers ever and scored 79 goals in 111 appearances for Zambia between 1968 and 1980.
The Zambian FA claimed that Chitalu scored more than 100 goals in all competitions in 1972, which would be a world record.
7: Ali Mabkhout (United Arab Emirates) – 80 goals
Ali Mabkhout became the UAE’s all-time leading goalscorer in October 2019 with a hat-trick against Indonesia in an emphatic 5-0 win.
With 80 goals in 109 appearances for his country, Mabkhout holds one of the best goal-per-game ratios at 0.74, better than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
5: Ferenc Puskas (Hungary) and Sunil Chhetri (India) – 84 goals
In just 85 games for Hungary, Ferenc Puskas scored an incredible 84 goals and became one of football’s first international superstars.
Puskas won an Olympic gold medal in 1952 and led Hungary to the World Cup Final in 1954.
Sunil Chhetri is the most-capped India national team player and all-time top goalscorer with 84 goals in 132 appearances since 2005.
Chhetri helped India qualify for a first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years after winning the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup.
4: Mokhtar Dahari (Malaysia) – 89 goals
Nicknamed ‘Supermokh,’ Mokhtar Dahari scored 89 goals in 142 international matches for Malaysia and is undoubtedly the country’s greatest footballer of all-time.
One of Dahari’s best achievements was leading his country to a bronze medal at the 1974 Asian Games.
3: Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 99 goals
With 99 goals in 173 games for his country, Lionel Messi is arguably the best footballer of all-time and cemented his name amongst the international greats with World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Messi also led Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021, winning the Golden Ball and Golden Boot.
2: Ali Daei (Iran) – 109 goals
Ali Daei scored 109 goals in 149 appearances for Iran between 1993 and 2006. He was the world’s top international goalscorer until his record was broken in 2021.
The former Bayern Munich striker captained Iran for six years and is known to be one of the greatest Asian players to grace the sport.
1: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 120 goals
With 120 goals in 197 appearances for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time men’s international goals leader and the men’s international appearances leader.
Ronaldo has played and scored in 11 major international tournaments and led Portugal to glory at the European Championships in 2016. Since making his debut in 2003, the Al-Nassr captain has dominated the global scene.

Harry Kane’s record-breaking 54th England goal sealed a 2-1 win for the Three Lions against Italy on Thursday night, but the 29-year-old has a long way to go until he breaks into the top ten.
Currently, Kane ranks as 56th. This is similar to Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney (53) and slightly better than Thierry Henry (51) and Robin van Persie (50).
