So many times in football we’ll see a star move to another club and it not work out meaning that the club will sell that player for a lesser fee than what they paid for. Here’s the top 10 biggest transfer losses in football history:

10th – Pulisic

Chelsea ended up losing £38m from Pulisic. They signed Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for £58m and sold him to AC Milan this summer for £20m.

9th – Fred

Under Jose Mourinho, Man United signed Fred for £52m in 2018. This summer he moved to Fenerbahce for £12.9m meaning United lost around £39m from the Brazilian midfielder.

8th – Fernando Torres

Chelsea signed Torres from Liverpool for £50m. He was one of the best strikers in world football at the time but flopped at Chelsea and then they sold him to AC Milan on a free transfer.

7th – Ousmane Dembélé

Barcelona signed the French winger for a whopping £97m in 2017. He was just 20 at the time. He never lived up to his potential and has now moved to PSG for £43.5m meaning a £53.5m loss for Barca.

6th – Nicolas Pépé

Arsenal signed Pépé for £72m but sold him to Trabzonspor for just £3m resulting in a £69m loss for the Gunners.

5th – Luis Suárez

Definitely a peculiar one considering Suárez has had a great career but Barcelona signed him for £75m from Liverpool. he spent 6 years at Barcelona where he won La liga and the Champions League. In 2020, Atletico Madrid signed him for £5m. A £70m drop for Barcelona despite him being worth every penny.

4th – Antoine Griezmann

Barcelona signed Griezmann for £103m. He flopped at Camp Nou and Atletico ended up re-signing him for £17m resulting in a £86m loss. No wonder Barcelona are struggling for money.

3rd – Cristiano Ronaldo

When Ronaldo returned to Man Utd in 2021, Juventus lost £86.4m when they sold him to United for £12.8m after they had signed him from Real Madrid for £99.2m

2nd – Neymar Jr

PSG signed Neymar for £200m. This summer he opted for the luxury life in Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal signed him for £77.6m (as well as a mansion, high-end cars,£138m-a-year salary and around $500,000 every social media post he makes about the club). £122.4m loss for PSG.

1st – Phillipe Coutinho

Barcelona again. They signed Coutinho for £142m from Liverpool. He struggled to perform and after a loan move to Bayern Munich, they ended up selling to Aston Villa for £17.2m. Barcelona lost £124.8m.
