Tony Calvin’s first tip on Saturday at Newmarket, 2000 Guineas Day, comes in the Howden Handicap in the form of the Roger Varian-trained SAINT LAWRENCE.

This is a horse who looks well treated off 103 back into handicap company on Saturday at Newmarket. Saint Lawrence shaped up promisingly here on his return in the Abernaut stakes, despite his own cojones op. He came back for more late doors after initially being outpaced, finishing off the race well despite coming sixth.

He was beaten just a length in the Palace House Stakes on this card last season, and just six lengths in the Group 1 King’s Stand. Calvin fancies his chances at lucrative 18/1 odds.

Calvin believes Saint Lawrence is essentially a good-ground horse, so hopes the ground gets no worse than good to soft come raceday.

• 4:00pm – Howden Palace House Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo+) 5f ITV: ARECIBO @ 18/1

The pace in the Palace House looks middle to high, and that could have scuppered the dart Calvin was going to go throw at ARECIBO, drawn in two, who needs to come fast and late on the back of a strongly-run race. He will certainly be coming late with jockey Jamie Spencer back on board.

He does go well here, he is ground-versatile, and he comes here in fair form after just not managing to get to the all-the-way-winner Live In The Dream at Pontefract last time. You can forgive that around that speed-favouring course.

This does look a minefield of a race, and Spencer will need all his guile to weave a late path through 16 rivals, but he looks a fair enough price at 18/1 or perhaps even higher – given his back-class and the other aforementioned positives.

All in all, Tony Calvin likes the chances of Arecibo in the Palace Stakes at 4.00pm on Saturday at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas Day.
