Paddington Odds-On Favourite Among Sussex Stakes Runners

If the horse racing betting is any indicator, then it’s very hard to look past Paddington. Aidan O’Brien is no stranger to Sussex Stakes success and his latest star turned owned by the Coolmore partners is unbeaten this year. There’s absolutely no doubt that Paddington will go off as favourite on the South Downs.

Next in the market is John and Thady Gosden’s four-year-old filly Inspiral. She seeks to go one better than her Queen Anne second at Royal Ascot on reappearance. The rest of the Sussex Stakes runners left in the race clearly have something to find with the market principals, however.

Another three-year-old, Charyn, takes his chance but has already been put in his place more than once by Paddington. French raider Facteur Cheval adds cross-Channel interest to the race, but has shaped as though further may suit. Chindit and Aldaary need to step up on their form, meanwhile, and prove they can hang in Group 1 company. Complete Sussex Stakes Runners Guide 2023

1. Aldaary

Twice a beaten favourite last month in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and then the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot races latest with his finishing effort on both occasions a concern. Mixed it between this trip and 7f throughout his career. An easy mile could suit, but up against it on ratings conceding weight to the market principals.

2. Chindit

Fourth and sixth in two tries over course and distance. Highly-tried throughout career, but poor sixth in Queen Anne latest after career-best second at Newbury races in the Lockinge before that. Always seems to find others too good at Group 1 level. Other Sussex Stakes runners appeal more.

3. Facteur Cheval

Placed on all three starts this year after landing a Group 3 at Saint-Cloud prior to his winter break. Not going the pace to reach Tribalist in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet over this trip on his penultimate start, but only beaten a head when upped to 1m 1f for the Prix d’Ispahan latest. Dropping back in distance not an obvious or logical step on that evidence.

4. Inspiral

Multiple Group 1 winner but swerved this race last year to run in France. Takes her chance with no Baaeed around now. Does throw in an occasional disappointing run like when held a neck by a 33/1 shot in the Queen Anne on reappearance, but clear second best on ratings. The only one of Sussex Stakes runners capable of giving the favourite a race on paper.

5. Charyn

Twice beaten by Paddington in the Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes when fourth and third respectively. Disappointing eighth when dropped in trip for the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat in France latest. Has handled soft ground in the past and receives weight from all but the favourite. Could be overpriced on that basis, but can probably achieve no better than third here.

6. Paddington

Siyouni colt unbeaten in five starts this year. Went from Madrid Handicap success at Naas on reappearance to Listed victory, then Curragh Classic and two Group 1s in the UK. Backed up St James’s Palace win by adding the Eclipse to his CV at Sandown races over further latest. Sets a clear and obvious form standard among Sussex Stakes runners down in trip.
