Despite another jumped start reminiscent of his Commonwealth Cup victory at Royal Ascot, Shaquille defied adversity yet again to bolt home and win the Group 1 July Cup Stakes at Newmarket.

Julie Camacho’s star missed the break again and found himself at the back of the pack before a smart move from Rossa Ryan to guide the three-year-old to the front and finish strongly secured a second Group 1 win of the season.

If Shaquille’s superstar status wasn’t already clear, he made it crystal with an outstanding performance to disregard late market support for Aidan O’Brien’s Little Big Bear, who looked already beaten before easing down two-and-a-half furlongs out under Ryan Moore.

Run To Freedom got up strongly for second place and Kinross finished third, with Art Power and Khaadem following in the each way extra places of fourth and fifth.

Shaquille went off at a starting price of 5/2 and is undeniably horse racing’s leading sprinter at the current moment in time, with the next target likely to be the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup in early September at Haydock Park.
