New London All The Rage In 2022 St Leger Betting
In the last 20 years we’ve seen two winners of the Gordon Stakes, which was run at Glorious Goodwood on 28th July this year (watch below), go onto win the St Leger.
Therefore, it’s no shock that this year’s Gordon Stakes winner NEW LONDON @ 7/10 with 888Sport has been popular in the St Leger betting since taking that race at the end of July, especially as the horse he beat into second – Deauville Legend – has since franked the form by landing the Group Two Great Voltigeur at York.
Deauville Legend is also not able to run in the 2022 St Leger as he’s been gelded, so even though New London beat the James Ferguson horse last time he won’t have him to worry about this Saturday.
In what doesn’t look a great renewal of the final of the English Classics, New London is sure to go off as the St Leger favourite come Saturday and if successful will provide trainer Charlie Appleby with his second win in the race and also give Godolphin a remarkable eighth St Leger victory. If that happens, it will make Godolphin the winning-most owners in the races history which dates back to 1776!
Jockey William Buick has ridden New London in all five of his races and will be looking for a fourth St Leger win after winning on Arctic Cosmos (2010), Masked Marvel (2011) and Hurricane Lane (2021).
Will New London Stay The Longer Trip?
Those looking to take New London on in the betting, will probably look to the trip and if New London will stay the longer 1m 6 1/2f distance. This will be the furthest he’s gone, with the Gordon Stakes run over 1m4f and his breeding being by Dubawi, who did most of his winning around a mile, suggests it might be hit or miss if he lasts out. On a plus though, regarding the trip, is that he’s a half-sister to the 2011 St Leger winner Masked Marvel.
New London also saw out the 1m4f trip well in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood to suggest he’s well worth a crack at this longer distance despite the Doncaster track likely to provide him with a bigger test than then downhill finish that Goodwood has – we’ll see!

Roger Varian Hoping For Second Leger Win With Eldar Eldarov
The Roger Varian camp, who won the St Leger in 2014 with Kingston Hill, have a live chance of upsetting the Godolphin applecart with ELDAR ELDAROV @ 7/2 with 888Sport. This 3 year-old is lightly-raced with just four career runs and has already proven himself over this sort of trip when winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June over 1m6f (watch below).
He’s rated 109 and that’s 6lbs inferior to New London, but with this only his fifth career start and the step back up in trip looking a big plus, then he’s sure to have his backers too.
Two 2022 St Leger Entries For Aidan O’Brien
Trainer Aidan O’Brien has sixth St Leger wins under his belt, with the last of those coming in 2018 with Kew Gardens. Unlike recent years, the Ballydoyle handler only has two entries at this stage – Bluegrass and Emily Dickinson. The pair are useful sorts, but it’s fair to say they are not looking like the normal O’Brien superstars in the making that have won the St Leger in the past.
Bluegrass @ 12/1 with 888Sport was last seen running down the field in the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown last time out (11th Aug) and didn’t seem to stay the 1m6f trip that day. Prior to that effort had caught the eye when third in the Dante Stakes at York to the subsequent Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown.
Emily Dickinson @ 20/1 with 888Sport looks O’Brien’s better chance after a close third in the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood at the end of July and prior to that run was a fine 4th in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh (watch below). The worry is that she’s only won one of her seven career starts, but does get the fillies’ allowance of 3lbs and she was doing her best work at the finish last time so the extra half a furlong in the St Leger will be right up her street.
Simple Verse (2015) was the last filly to win the St Leger and before that User Friendly (1992) was another female St Leger winner. In total, since 1955 we’ve seen just seven winning St Leger fillies.
Unbeaten Haskoy Supplemented For 2022 St Leger
Trainer Ralph Beckett was responsible for the last filly to win the St Leger – Simple Verse in 2015 – and he’ll be trying to add to that ‘Girl Power’ in the final of the English Classics with Haskoy @ 8/1 with 888Sport. This Juddmonte-owned 3 year-old was supplemented recently for the Doncaster Classic and will head into Saturday’s race 2-from-2 and unbeaten after wins at Wolverhampton and York.
The last of those was at Listed level over 1m4f, but this well-bred Golden Horn filly looks the sort to have a lot more in the locker and it would be no shock to see her improve again over this longer trip. To fork out the supplement fee connections clearly feel she’s up to the task.
What Do Haskoy’s Connections Say?
Barry Mahon (Juddmonte Racing Manager), told Sky Sports Racing: “The Abdullah family have agreed with Ralph that as long as she’s fit and well tomorrow morning, she’s going to be supplemented for the St Leger.
“She’s been fast-tracked along, having gone into training late and winning her maiden on the all-weather before winning very gutsy the last day in the Galtres.
“I think the fact that we have Yesyes going to the Park Hill made both Ralph and the Abdullah family feel it was worth having a tilt at the St Leger.
“He’s done it before, he’s won it with a filly and he’s been placed with a filly. Nobody can doubt Ralph’s skills, it’s unbelievable the year he’s having – especially for us.
“He thought it was a good idea and especially when we have the two fillies, it’s good to keep them apart.”
