The St Leger Stakes is the big highlight horse race today at Doncaster with the rescheduled Group One now running a day later than originally planned due to the Queen’s death. The Cazoo-sponsored St Leger is the final and oldest of the English Classics so it’s a Group One with plenty of history and prestige attached to it.
Note: Due to Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the St Leger has been moved from Saturday 10th Sept to Sunday 11th Sept.
12 months ago we saw Godolphin’s Hurricane Lane take the race (watch below) and the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin have another big chance this year with recent Gordon Stakes winner New London – he’ll be looking to give Godolphin their eighth success in the race.
We take a look at how the latest 2022 St Leger betting (see below) is shaping up and highlight some key St Leger trends that will give you the best profile based on past winners. Plus, Andy Newton also gives you his main St Leger tip and his each-way value St Leger best bet.

St Leger 2022 Tip: New London Worth Your Capital
NEW LONDON @ Evs with 888Sport can become the third Gordon Stakes winner of the St Leger in the last 20 years, as the ‘boys’ in blue’ of Godolphin eye win number eight in this oldest of the five English Classics.
You can see his Gordon Stakes Goodwood win below again, which was this 3 year-old’s fourth win from his opening five starts. The second, Deauville Legend, has since franked the form to win the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, but being a gelding he can’t run in this Leger, which is good news for New London fans.
What About The Longer Trip For New London?
Yes, this step up to 1m6f will be a first for New London so those looking to take him on will cling to this as a reason to hunt elsewhere for the winner.
This will be the furthest he’s gone, with the Gordon Stakes run over 1m4f and his breeding being by Dubawi, who did most of his winning around a mile, indicated it might be ‘hit or miss’ if he sees it out. On a plus though, regarding the distance, is that he’s a half-sister to the 2011 St Leger winner Masked Marvel – this will give his backers hope he can last out.
New London also saw out the 1m4f trip well in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood – winning by 1 3/4 lengths – to suggest he’s well worth a crack at 1m6f despite the Doncaster track likely to provide him with a bigger test than then downhill finish that Goodwood has – we’ll see!
Godolphin Have Seven St Leger Wins Already
The St Leger is also a race the Godolphin camp love to target – they’ve mopped up seven successes in the oldest of the English Classics.
The first came in 1995 with the classy Classic Cliche and they’ve gone onto add Nedawi (1998), Mutafaweq (1999), Rule Of Law (2004), Mastery (2009), Encke (2012), with Hurricane Lane, who won the St Leger last year in 2021, their most recent success in the Doncaster Group One.

Roger Varian Looks For Seond Leger Win
The Roger Varian yard, who won the St Leger in 2014 with Kingston Hill, have a live chance of spoiling the Godolphin party with ELDAR ELDAROV @ 13/2 with 888Sport. This 3 year-old is lightly-raced with only four career runs and has already proven himself over this sort of trip when winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June over 1m6f (watch below).
He’s rated 109 and that’s 6lbs inferior to New London, but with this only his fifth career start and the step back up in trip looking a big plus, then he’s sure to have his supporters too.
Can Aidan O’Brien Win His Seventh St Leger?
Anything trainer Aidan O’Brien runs the St Leger has to be respected too – no matter what the price. He’s notched up 6 St Leger wins over the years, with the last of those coming in 2018 with Kew Gardens. Unlike recent years, the Ballydoyle handler only has just one entry this year – Emily Dickinson.
Emily Dickinson @ 16/1 with 888Sport was a close third in the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood at the end of July and prior to that was a fine 4th in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh (watch below). The slight worry is that she’s only won one of her seven career starts, but does get the fillies’ allowance of 3lbs and she was doing her best work at the finish last time – therefore, the extra half a furlong in the St Leger will be right up her street, plus the softer ground can also bring out her stamina more. She looks overpriced from a powerful yard.
Simple Verse (2015) was the last filly to win the St Leger and before that User Friendly (1992) was another female St Leger winner. In total, since 1955 we’ve seen just seven winning St Leger fillies.
Haskoy Was Supplemented For 2022 St Leger
Trainer Ralph Beckett was responsible for the last filly to win the St Leger – Simple Verse in 2015 – and he’ll be trying to add to that ‘Girl Power’ in the final of the English Classics with Haskoy @ 9/2 with 888Sport. This Juddmonte-owned 3 year-old was supplemented recently for the Doncaster Classic and will head into Saturday’s race 2-from-2 and unbeaten after wins at Wolverhampton and York.
The last of those was at Listed level over 1m4f, but this well-bred Golden Horn filly looks the sort to have a lot more in the locker and it would be no shock to see her improve again over this longer trip. To fork out the supplement fee connections clearly feel she’s up to the task.
What Do Haskoy’s Connections Say?
Barry Mahon (Juddmonte Racing Manager), told Sky Sports Racing: “The Abdullah family have agreed with Ralph that as long as she’s fit and well tomorrow morning, she’s going to be supplemented for the St Leger.
“She’s been fast-tracked along, having gone into training late and winning her maiden on the all-weather before winning very gutsy the last day in the Galtres.
“I think the fact that we have Yesyes going to the Park Hill made both Ralph and the Abdullah family feel it was worth having a tilt at the St Leger.
“He’s done it before, he’s won it with a filly and he’s been placed with a filly. Nobody can doubt Ralph’s skills, it’s unbelievable the year he’s having – especially for us.
“He thought it was a good idea and especially when we have the two fillies, it’s good to keep them apart.”

Derby Second Hoo Ya Mal Will Have Supporters Too
The consistent George Boughey runner HOO YA MAL @ 7/1 with 888Sport will have his supporters too and is actually the top-rated in the field at 116, which is a pound more than New London. This is slightly odd as New London beaten him 2 lengths in the Gordon Stakes at the end of July at Goodwood.
However, Hoo Ya Mal has since coming out an won well at Goodwood when taking the March Stakes in effortless fashion. That came over 1m6f too, so we know he enjoyed the longer trip and will stay the Leger distance. He’s also acted with a bit of cut so anymore rain is fine.
St Leger 2022: Emily Dickinson and Hoo Ya Mal The Each-Way Value
Away from the the main pick – New London – for those looking for a bit of value, then EMILY DICKINSON @ 16/1 with 888Sport and HOO YA MAL @ 7/1 with 888Sport get the call.
Both are proven over 1m6f, so we know the St Leger trip of 1m 61/2f will be fine. O’Brien, who trained Emily Dickinson has a top record in the too, with six past wins, while let’s not forget Hoo Ya Mal is the top-rated in the field and is also yet to finish out of the first three from his 8 runs.
