South Korea got their 2022 World Cup campaign off and running on Thursday with a Group H clash against Uruguay and the big talking point was South Korea’s entire defence (plus goalkeeper) all had the same surname – Kim!
Kim The Commentator’s Nightmare (Or Not) For The South Korea World Cup Games
If your name is Kim and you come from South Korea, then it seems you’ve got a head start into getting into any future World Cup squad.
Why? Well, on Thursday 24th November South Korea gave the World Cup commentators something to think out (or not) by naming five players with the surname ‘KIM’ in their starting XI in their opening Group H game against Uruguay.
Okay, actually some might argue that his would make the commentator’s life easier – especially as ALL of the South Korean ‘Kims’ were defenders and the goalkeeper. Oh, and they also had another Kim on the bench!
Therefore, in theory, as soon as Uruguay went on the attack and there was a defensive clearance by South Korean there was probably a 99% chance it was made by a player called ‘Kim’!
Will The Real ‘Kim’ Shady Please Stand Up?
And, what about the bookmakers? With just under half of the South Korean players with the same surname, then placing a first scorer, anytime scorer or even a booking wager on a player called Kim would require the layers to check, double check and the triple check they are paying out on the right player!
South Korea Playing in Their Tenth Consecutive World Cup Finals
Remarkably, South Korea will be playing in their tenth straight World Cup Finals in Qatar, but despite coming fourth in 2002 when they hosted the event, they’ve not sparkled away from home soil.
Over the last two World Cup Finals in 2018 and 2014, South Korea have taken only four points from their six group games, but, on a plus, they did make it to Qatar this year with ease – losing only one of their 16 games.
Has Something Similar Happened at The World Cup Before?
Sort of, but not on the scale of South Korea’s Kim story.
In 2010, the North Korea World Cup side had a squad that consisted of five players called Ri and four each with the surname Pak and Kim.
