Shishkin Expected to Be Short-Priced Ryanair Chase Favourite
With no Allaho, who has won the last two runnings, in the Ryanair Chase this year – this have paved the way for a new winner.
Many feel that ‘new winner’ will be the Nicky Henderson-trained SHISHKIN, who is set to go off as the short-prices favourite.
The 9 year-old won the 2021 Arkle Chase (watch below) at the Festival but last year flopped as favourite for the Champion Chase, behind Energumene. However, a recent return to form, when winning the Ascot Chase over a longer trip, has sparked him back to life.
As a result, the UK horse racing betting sites are taking no chances with him for the Ryanair Chase – with BetUK @ 4/6 for Shishkin to win his second Festival race.
Shiskhin is also entered in the Gold Cup @ 8/1, but his connections have said the Ryanair Chase is his preferred Cheltenham Festival option.
78% Of The Last 18 Ryanair Chase Winners Were Favourites or Second Favourites
Shishkin can be expected to feature heavily in many Cheltenham Festival banker doubles, trebles and accas too. While with a massive 78% of the last 18 Ryanair Chase winners either favourite or second favourite, this is another plus for the chaser.
Shishkin Relished the Longer Trip Last Time In The Ascot Chase
The return to form for Shishkin, after two poor runs, was also attributedto the longer trip last time. He was stepping up to 2m5f for the first time and clearly relished the extra yardage – winning by 16 lengths.
With the Ryanair Chase run over a distance of 2m 4 1/2f, Shishkin will be getting a similar trip at Cheltenham.
Who Are the Ryanair Chase Dangers for Shishkin?
The Willie Mullins runner – Blue Lord – is entered in the Champion Chase, but could also come here. He flopped in the Dublin Chase last time at odds-on, but like Shishkin many feel the longer trip will help him.
Fury Road is a very likely Gordon Elliott runner in the race. He was third to the Gold Cup favourite Galopin Des Champs last time in the Irish Gold Cup.
Last year’s third Janidil is another that has claims for Willie Mullins, while the 2021 Ryanair Chase runner-up Fakir D’Oudairies could run too. However, the last-named was 23 lengths adrift of Shishkin at Ascot last time out.
