Ivory Coast, who host this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, welcome the reigning champions Senegal to the Stade de Yamoussoukro for a Round of 16 faceoff on Monday evening.
Sadio Mane and co. provided an immaculate display in the group stages, finishing top of Group C after winning all three of their matches against Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea, however the same cannot be said for the Ivorians.
Despite a strong start with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast recorded back-to-back defeats – losing 1-0 to Nigeria, as well as a shocking 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea. On the brink of elimination, the football federation decided to part ways with head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.
Results elsewhere though, meant that the Elephants were not eliminated and now find themselves in the last-16 without a manager. According to reports, former boss and current manager of the French national women’s team Herve Renard has been contacted in regards to a possible loan, but Emerse Fae has stepped up as caretaker in the meantime.
