Senegal qualified for the last 16 on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Ecuador, however the African nation is now facing investigation from FIFA after allegedly breaking World Cup rules prior to the Ecuador match.

On Wednesday morning it was confirmed that the Senegalese FA will face a FIFA probe after they failed to comply with World Cup regulations before the Ecuador game.

It is mandatory for all teams to conduct a ‘Matchday -1 Press Conference’ the day before any game, which is held at the World Cup’s main media centre. These conferences have to be attended by both the manager of the country as well as one player, something that Senegal failed to do on Monday – the day before the Ecuador clash in group A.

Senegal manager Aliou Cissé chose to attend the press conference alone on Monday, with the 46-year old speaking on his own for 40 minutes instead of bringing one of his players which is a clear breach in FIFA regulations.

FIFA did not take lightly to Cissé’s actions however and on Wednesday morning they announced that disciplinary actions would be taken against Senegal.

FIFA official statement:

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Senegalese Football Federation due to the potential breaches of article 44 of the Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, article 2.7.2 of the Media and Marketing Regulations and article 8.5.3 of the Team Handbook.”

Senegal will be hoping that the investigation into their side can be concluded before Sunday, as they have been set up with an enticing last 16 clash with England that takes place in the Al Bayt Stadium.
