  • Mehdi Taremi (scored) – England vs Iran
  • Gareth Bale (scored) – USA vs Wales
  • Lionel Messi (scored) – Argentina vs Saudi Arabia
  • Robert Lewandowski (saved) Poland vs Mexico

Total Penalties Awarded At Every World Cup

The first World Cup was in Uruguay back in 1930, and fast forward 98 years we’ve seen a grand total of 253 penalties including Qatar 22 (so far) and the number is expected to rise a lot more. Roy Keane, believes that there will be a “record number of penalties” this winter (watch till end).

  • 1930, Uruguay – 4
  • 1934, Italy – 5
  • 1938, France – 5
  • 1950, Brazil – 3
  • 1954, Switzerland – 7
  • 1958, Sweden – 10
  • 1962, Chile – 8
  • 1966, England – 8
  • 1970, Mexico – 5
  • 1974, Germany – 8
  • 1978, Argentina – 14
  • 1982, Spain – 10
  • 1986, Mexico – 16
  • 1990, Italy – 18

  • 2014, Brazil – 13
  • 2018, Russia – 29 (current record)
  • 2022, Qatar – 8 (so far)

With eight penalties in just 16 games so far in Qatar after just one round of games, by the end of the group stages after each team has played three times that would be expected to triple to 24 in 48 games. By end of play after 64 games, we could see at least 32 penalties, in a 32 team tournament, averaging one every two games.
