Javi Gracia lasted just 10 weeks in Yorkshire, and with Leeds now teetering on the edge of the relegation zone, the club have taken the drastic step to name a new manager for the third time this season. With four games remaining in their survival run-in, we are taking a closer look at Sam Allardyce’s Premier League record, and why his resumé shows he is much more than a safe pair of hands.

As a new manager takes control of the reigns and attempts to steady a sinking ship, Leeds fans need not reminding – when Sam Allardyce is called upon, it usually means a team is in danger of relegation.

However, that perception doesn’t quite do the man justice, in fact, quite the opposite.

His previous job titles do hold a discernible pattern of teams struggling near the foot of the table, but the widely-used notion of Allardyce being a ‘survival specialist’ has muddied the waters of what is actually a highly respectable track record.

His arrival at Elland Road marks his ninth Premier League appointment, and an 18th season in the top-flight, albeit for the remaining four games.

His most recent role at West Brom in the 2020/21 season was the one and only occasion he failed to escape relegation, but the former one-time England manager holds a commendable 33% win rate in the Premier League across 537 matches in the dugout.

Only four of his previous roles (Crystal Palace; 17th, Blackburn Rovers; 19th, Sunderland; 19th and West Brom; 19th) were taken up when teams were in trouble of relegation, so the label of relegation rescuer is somewhat of a misnomer.

‘Big Sam’ may have the most difficult job of all this time around however. He arrives in Yorkshire just as Leeds equal the record for the most goals conceded in a single calendar month, which is coupled by five defeats in seven games throughout April, leaving them only ahead of 18th-placed Nottingham Forest thanks to a superior goal difference.
