More Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Festival tips as the meeting’s leading rider picks out his FIVE best Irish horses over the four days.
Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Festival Tips: Five Irish Horses to Back
With 59 Cheltenham Festival winners, no jockey has ridden more horses to victory than Ruby Walsh at this meeting. He retired back in 2019, but still has strong links to the Willie Mullins yard.
Therefore, when asked which Irish horses Ruby is tipping ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival – we should all take note – right?
FACILE VEGA (Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Tues 14th March) @ 5/2 with BetUK
Flopped at the Dublin Racing Festival last time out, but before that had won all 6 starts. He went off too quick the last day too, so is likely to be ridden differently here. Won the Champion Bumper at this meeting 12 months ago and Ruby feels this Mullins runner can bounce back.
IMPAIRE ET PASSE (Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, Weds 15th March) @ 9/4 with BetUK
Yet to lose a race, from three starts. Impressed last time at Punchestown in January, winning the Moscow Flyer Novices’ Hurdle and that form would make him a big player here. A race Willie Mullins also won last year and back in 2014 with the classy Faugheen.
It’s also worth noting that Impaire Et Passe @ 4/1 with BetUK could run in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Tues 14th March), but with BetUK’s non-runner, no bet, you will be covered.

HOME BY THE LEE (Stayers’ Hurdle, Thurs 16th March) @ 5/1 with BetUK
Not from the Mullins yard, but Ruby feels this Joseph O’Brien runner has a big chance of improving on his 6th in the race last year. Has returned this season better than ever with wins at Navan and Leopardstown. With those different riding tactics clearly paying off.
COLONEL MUSTARD (County Hurdle, Fri 17th March) @ 10/1 with BetUK
From the Lorna Fowler yard and was seen just recently when a fine second in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso. Gets in here off the same mark and with that run coming off a 73-day break can improve for it.
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS (Gold Cup, Fri 17th March) @ 13/8 with BetUK
Galopin Des Champs fell in the Tuners Novices’ Chase last year but can make amends here in the biggest race of them all. The Mullins horse has been the Gold Cup favourite all season and Ruby thinks he’ll prevail. Stamina looks fine, after winning the Irish Gold Cup well last time, and at just 7 years-old will have more in the locker too.
