In what could well be Ruben Neves’ final performance at Molineux, the Portuguese maestro was seen applauding the Wolves faithful following their last home game of the season.

Ruben Neves to Barcelona?

Laughably good at times, the 26-year-old registered a vintage performance in the middle of the park despite Everton’s last-gasp equaliser.

Arriving in the Championship as a budding young 20-year-old, having been named the youngest Champions League captain ever for boyhood club Porto, he has since gone on to etch his name into the rich tapestry of Wolves.

As his sixth year in the Midlands draws to a close, so too could his Wolves career if rumours are to be taken at face value. A personal dream to represent Barcelona may finally come to fruition this summer, particularly with loyal servant Sergio Busquets bringing the curtain down on his career in Catalonia.

Speaking at the club’s end-of-season presentations after the game, he said: “I want to be here, but I never hide that I want to play Champions League football. It’s a hard decision. Me and my family love it here, but in football you have to go for your main goals.

“Nothing’s happened yet. If it was my last game here I really enjoyed it and I’m very thankful for the last six seasons.”

Although transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barca manager Xavi doesn’t consider Neves to be a main priority this summer, there are members of the sporting hierarchy that are firm admirers.

He has all the credentials to succeed amongst the newly-crowned La Liga champions, but whether the club will be in a healthy enough position financially to fund a deal remains to be seen.

Strong links with former captain and club legend Lionel Messi refuse to subside, with many observers quick to point out that this remains their first priority –  on a sporting, emotional and commercial level.

Nevertheless, it would appear Ruben Neves is prepared to fend off other potential suitors and wait for Barcelona this summer, should their interest grow stronger.
